After embracing my sexuality in 2007, I have finally come out to my family. After telling mom after coming back from a trip from Yellowstone National Parkin October 2012, my New Year's resolution was completed this week when I sent a 4-page letter to my siblings. (7 brothers and 2 sisters) telling them that they have a brother that is gay. It's a major hurdle that I needed to accomplish in my own life, with no regrets, and it had to happen on my own timeline, not theirs or anyone elses.

They should have all received there letters as of Friday. I haven't heard any aftershocks as of tonight, but I assume there will be some fallout, but I'm finally moving forward with my life, whether they love me or not. I suspect they all do, some will come out and say it, and some won't. It was a difficult decision, but I can't take living this lie anymore. I can only imagine what the rest of 2013 has in store. Thanks to all those on here who have posted in the past their encouraging coming out stories. It truly helped me come to this point in my life. Thanks guys. icon_biggrin.gif

    Good luck.

When I came out to my family I wanted the Disney Version where were all hugged each other but realistically they found out in a politically incorrect way, I wrote a hot gay sex story and my sister found it and gave it to my dad.

He told me that it was okay I was gay, but the story was way too nasty and inappropriate so he burned it in front of me - which to me was a bit of a double-standard. But people are just people and I don't think full acceptance exists for all of us.

But it's not like they kicked me out or anything. However I did feel isolated and not very emotionally supported sometimes.

People are conflicted. They want to love people but for a lot of people, the actual homosexual part is gross for them. They don't want to picture me having sex with a man even for me, it's no big deal. Some people just feel it should be gross for everybody - and well I just hope everything goes okay and u get everything you want.

    WOW...4 page letter...impressive.
I asked my 2 brothers to help me move and over lunch told them, "I'm gay". They both said in essence..."ok, that's cool."
Cost me a pizza and a six pack of pepsi.
My parents I invited over for dinner...pretty much the same reaction...with a few tears. But then again, there was wine involved.

Everyone does it in their own time and way.

    Congrats! :-)

Wishing you all the very best in coming out to your immediate family. Hopefully there will be no negative fallout, just total acceptance for you and life being the same as before you came out to them. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. I would also love to see your homestate of South Dakota become a more accepting and friendly place for gay men like yourself.

I figured I'd just let my siblings and the world know through facebook haha, but I plan on telling my parents either in person or on the phone (I live out of state now).

    Congrats on your journey icon_smile.gif
