Do you mean 400-500 calories / meal?
Per day, with training, and you're likely to lose muscle with only 400 calories!

A banana is about 100 calorie. 500 is dangerously low.

400 cals per day more or less cover your brain need.
So I guess you mean per meal, or you don't properly make your calories count ;-)

Ethiopians consume more than that with two grains of rice.

High metabolism. Welcome to the club. It sucks when you're trying to gain weight though.

400 calories a day is borderline anorexia. You need to eat more than this for your fitness challenge; otherwise, your metabolism will eventually start to consume protein for energy and this can lead to a host of health problems.

You really should eat 3 meals a day plus healthy snacks. Your body processes food better if it's not all at once, and your energy level won't fluctuate so much if you have a steady source of fuel for your body.

Min required is 1200 cal/day to keep the body from going into starvation mode. Don't cut beyond that! you'll definitely loose muscle

A question to answer before we can properly answer your first is, what kind of results are you trying to achieve? Are you wanting to lose weight or are you trying to put muscle on?

I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and believe that he either 1) doesn't know how to count calories or 2) mistyped. Sheer hunger would force him to consume more calories than that. I'm sure they eat more than that on Survivor.

There are a lot of posts here and other places (bodybuilding.com) for example that have calculators on how many calories you should be consuming.
