the best opening lines for chatting with strangers online

I am interested in linguistics and have some questions in mind. A few days ago I watched the Hobbit and some dialogues were so beautiful and moving that made me start reading the book.

By contrast, this morning a stranger popped in from MSN and then started with 'Hi' and then 'What are you up to?'. Usually I would be polite and try to keep the conversation going. But when I just woke up and was still drowsy, I found that kind of conversations really taxing and even annoying.

So in reality, I don't like that kind of opening lines and I just try to make do. But I also use the same opening lines so they must be similarly unimpressive.

Can you share your killing icebreakers or those you find the most impressive or curious? (For strangers and mostly online without other cues)

If it is a site that has a profile I try to look for something we have in common and ask what they like about it. People like to talk about the things they're interested in so that usually gets people to open up a bit more.

Apparrantly it's a toss up between "Unlock?" and "So, how big's that cock of yours?"

    'Course I only attract a high-falootin', classy-ass kinda fella...

I get that all the time too. It'd be nice if someone was ever interested in my mind. icon_lol.gif

I usually say "hey how are you doing today? *Then insert random question or thing you have In common here, besides a dick and being horny*"

Online opening lines don't matter. No matter what you say, if they don't think that you're "hot" they won't reply back to you.
There are exceptions however, take for example this forum. If you get to know the people, many will actually respond with a simple hello via Email.

    Yay! You get a gold_star.png

Seriously though, if I open up a PM for someone for the first time, it's because I have something specific to say, ask or comment about. I don't see the person and then think "what could I say to start talking to them?".

I expect the same when a person starts talking to me. There is oodles in my profile to have a reaction to, but a lot of the time when I get an IM or random mail, it's by a person who hasn't even read it and is just throwing a ball in my court. It feels like one extra chore to do and I'd rather not get chatted up at all in those cases.
