    Hey guys,

So me and a few friends are taking a cruise this year for Spring Break. The ship leaves from Galveston TX and docks at Cozumel and Progresso Mexico. We have plans for Cozumel (Mayan ruins at Tulum) but none of us really know what to do in Progresso.

Have any of you guys been there and recommend something we might no think of? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks! icon_smile.gif

Hop on a bus or taxi and to Merida. It's a beautiful colonial town. Or find a bar and each tacos and drink cervezas all afternoon.

If you are going to be there for a a whole day- Chichen Itza is just a couple hours away.

We'll be there for 7 1/2 hours only so I don't wanna go too far and not get back in time before the boat leaves! icon_wink.gif

    Is Chichen Itza to far?

I was just in Mexico, Merida and had gone to Chichen itza. Progresso is not too far away from Merida. If you do end up going to Chichen Itza you're really going to be cutting it close even though It would only be like 2 hours away. Sometimes the busses are late. One bus I was on was half a day late and I was waiting at Chichen Itza.
Chichen Itza is a spectacular site (1 of the seven wonders) to see and I highly recommend it but it might be a wiser choice if you were to see that the next time you are in Mexico.
I actually have a pic of me at El Castillo in my profile. I was there on Doomsday for the Mayan Calendar. It was amazing.
Sorry I'm not sure what to do in Progresso, you should see if there are any Cenotes in the local area, which is caves which have water going through them underground. They are amazing! Also my friends that went to Progresso went there for the beach. I don't think it was anything spectacular though.

I found a company that buses cruise ship tourist from Progresso to the ruins (I want to go to Uxmal). Has anyone done an Auto Progresso tour before? I want to go to the ruins so badly, being a history major I would completely geek out! icon_biggrin.gif

Also, donkey show? I have a philosophy that you should do give everything a chance . . . Well minus murder and Justin Bieber cuz those are never OK. A donkey show may be pushing it though, that's something that could scar you forever! icon_eek.gif

Make sure all of the drugs you buy have the right stamp of the local cartel. If you get caught with them then you only have to pay the cops a 'fine'. Otherwise you are stuck in jail.

Obviously I know because a 'friend' told me about it.

Poisonous water, 9mm pistols, and "buy local" heroin . . . and here I was worried the worst thing would be forgetting to apply my SPF 500! icon_eek.gif

I was in Guadalajara this past August. and enjoyed every minute! Be sure and sight see, wander around, hire a tour guide too! Expect plenty of sexy men, dear god the sexy men! I was with my mother so I could not do much but stare.

My parents went to Merida and enjoyed it. If you think ruins will interest you, then go for 'em.

My greatest frustration with traveling is that I can't do it all at once. Get a taste, get oriented and go back. It is an accessible place.

Hyper tourist spots in Mexico (Cancun, Acapulco, Cabo, etc) don't function as or reflect actual Mexico. They are US embassies for US tourists geared and structured to gouge US vacationers of their superfluous vacation dollars.
