African homophobia is a heritage left behind by the European colonists.
I'm glossing over a lot of material and making some broad generalizations, so to anyone who reads this: don't read too deeply into my explanation...
They are called "repugnancy clauses", and they're still largely extant. They basically made it so that any tribal practices deemed "repugnant" could be banned by the colonists on a whim. Homosexuality was once practiced widely and openly throughout sub-Saharan Africa alongside polygamy. These were also European practices basically up until Judeo-Christian tradition started.
