bump.

    also,

Notre Dame U. Official statement (via Facebook)On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

First thing that crossed my mind: he's one of us. Perhaps this other dude is his DL guy... Everything just fits too well, devout Mormon, fake girlfriend...

Know I'm not the only one to come to the conclusion...

Yes this is probably the biggest catfish of all time, although part of me thinks he knew it wasn't true. Imagine if he won the Heisman, he'd might have to give it back...

I'm surprised this wasn't verified earlier! So many dishonest people these days, it's really sad.

Also, if they "knew" Dec. 26th, why did Te'o participate in stories about his "girlfriend" during the week leading up to the Championship game?

That he WASN'T on the DL with the church singer dude was my null hypothesis. And I'm knocking that baby down each time I re-read it. icon_exclaim.gif

    Manti's father back in September:

"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple."

Now I do think Dad was not in on it, up until the death. He was just parroting the narrative his son gave him. But I do suspect he and the Te'os went into full PR prep mode after the lie unraveled (at least a month before Dec. 26).

What about the phone call? Did Manti/Tuiasosopo set someone up to pretend she was Kekua and actually talk to Dad on the phone, or was this story just passed down through Manti and not refuted?

ESPNTe'o issued a statement Wednesday afternoon:

Manti Te'o"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."

    "Oh, Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeev!"

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8851033/story-manti-teo-girlfriend-death-apparently-hoax

ESPNReagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011.

"This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa."

Mauia said Tuiasosopo -- whom Mauia believes is Kekua's cousin -- introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp.

"She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... "

He said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother.

When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said "No, she is real."

I'm thinking escort, how about you?

I think this is exactly what happened. He came from a devout Morman family and he also went to the nation's top Catholic school. Plus, there is a stigma in college football with being gay. I think this was a cover for Manti to his family and then it leaked to the public.

As my mom always told me, the truth will eventually get out.

    http://www.southbendtribune.com/sbt-cruel-hoax-20130116,0,4754122.story

South Bend Tribune"There's a lot of tragedy here," the Notre Dame athletic director said at a press conference Wednesday night, hastily called to tell the school's side of a bizarre twist in the story of the school's most celebrated football player in years, linebacker Manti Te'o.

"There's a lot of sorrow here," he continued. But the thing I am most sad of, sad about is ...

Swarbricks voice trailed off as he tried to gather himself.

"Sorry, that the single-most trusting human being I've ever met will never be able to trust in the same way again in his life. That's an incredible tragedy."

I'm wondering if Swarbricks looked out at a mirror before he paused. icon_wink.gif

I don't think he'd have to give it back. He didn't break any NCAA rules in doing so. It's not like he took money or other benefits from boosters, or committed academic fraud. Typically, those would be the only reasons an award would be taken away.

A premonition from his HS recruiting years, perhaps, before Manti speaks out:

    http://byu.scout.com/2/792003.html

Scout.comSecretive, sly and smiling, 17-year-old Manti Te’o – America’s No. 1 rated 2009 prep linebacker prospect – should be recruited by the CIA for his innate and disarming ability to tell you exactly what you want to hear without telling you anything at all.

Catfish of the Year (Decade)? Don't understand the reference.

At best, the guy is incredibly naive . . . an emotional relationship online? Sorry, has to be face-to-face at some time to get to emotional, IMHO

mileshelvetica saidCatfish of the Year (Decade)? Don't understand the reference.

You'll have to see the movie (I tell everyone I can to see the flick before they watch the TV episodes) for an understanding of the exact reference to the fish and why, but in the interim you can start here for the pop-culture implementation of the term:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catfish:_The_TV_Show

WikiA "catfish" is a person who creates fake profiles online and pretends to be someone they are not by using someone else's pictures and information. These "catfish" use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, usually with the intention of getting other people or a person to fall in love with them.

Actually, here it is (origin of the term):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catfish_(film)

(Angela's husband) Vince, talking with Nev, tells a story. He says that when live cod were shipped to Asia from North America, the fish's inactivity in their tanks resulted in mushy flesh, but fishermen found that putting catfish in the tanks with the cod kept them active. Vince feels that people like Angela are "catfish", who keep other people active in life.

He claimed in the past to have met her in Hawaii. His family claimed to meet her. Maybe he was trying to cover up the fact that he had never met her and was ashamed of the "internet' girlfriend.

Either he was in on the whole thing or he is just not very bright. I feel sorry for the guy but this is 2012, we have a thing called Skype and it takes a dummy to fall for something like this.

My biggest issue: The University of Notre Dame knew on Dec 26th that this was a hoax yet allowed the stories during the National Title game to continue to air.
