    Hey guys,

I've had an incredibly rough 6 months and I'm physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted. I was talking to a friend yesterday about needing to get away for a bit, and within 30 minutes we had a flight booked and a place to stay! I love my spontaneous friends!! Wondering if anyone knows of any good restaurants, nightlife, etc while I'm there. Will be either hanging by the pool or the beach during the day!

    Thanks,
    Dan

Interesting destination point. I've lived in FL but never made it out there... always heard it is more popular for those with white hair or no hair left icon_cool.gif

I know there are some decent clubs in Fort Myers to the south. Nothing worth making the area a real vacation spot IMO. Enjoy I bet the weather will be wonderful.

I'm from there. People go there to retire. It's boring as heck so good luck.

head northward to Casey Key.....take the south road (bridge) there to drive the Key for some specatcular homes...and eat at the Casey Key Fish House on the north road to the island.

Yeah....interesting choice for a Florida destination, but if you want to relax and unwind, I see nothing wrong with it.

If you are going in March and if you're a baseball fan, the best team in all of baseball (my opinion-so there), the Tampa Bay Rays hold Spring Training in Port Charlotte.

Had friends there and still do (after they moved back to PC) so I'm familair with it. There really is nothing to do save for the beach per se and going to the PC Mall. Why did you pick PC of all places? Why not Ft Myers Beach, larger and just to the south. I was shocked there were any gay bars in PC. There are really only 3 in Ft Myers, Bottom Line out on the east side, the one in the shopping mall, Tubbys, and the hole in the wall on Rt. 41 - Chubbys is it? Where are you staying in PC - when I went there I stayed at the newer Microtel (opened 200icon_cool.gif right off Route 41 behind Bob Evans.

Well you can wander down to the touristy St. Armand's Key to the south, or even over the Skyway Bridge to the north. That is an event in itself. there are colleges in St. Pete and Sarasota and the Ringling Bros. Museum and Ringling's house.

For the most part the west coast of Florida is like the bay, gentler than the Atlantic and more laid back than the east coast. There are things to look around for--Google it all-- but it is a great area to just take a book and veg out.

Port Charlotte is all about decompressing. It's not about nightlife and such.

Stump Pass Beach State Park is a great place to just "be".

Sanibel Island / Captiva Island to the south is also a great place to just "be".

Paulie, you said exactly what I was thinking.....I wanted to be kind for a change, but.........I thought I would be semi-nice here.

When I was in banking years ago, the Ft. Lauderdale-based bank I worked for had an office in Port Charlotte. We had nicknames for the towns they were in and Port Charlotte was.....

    Port Toilet
    Port-O-Let

The poor OP is gonna cancel this trip!

Port Shithole is just north of Fart Myers (or Fort Misery, if you want to call it that...)

Or if you want to bring up literature, just remember the tail of Charlotte's Web.

Ain't nothing but a bunch of fat pigs there. icon_twisted.gif

Bilingual I'm not, but I heard that nearby Punta Gorda (translated to English) means "fat bitch."

Like I said, the Rays brighten up that area in March....I'm ready!

About 30/40 minutes away is Venice and Sarasota. Lots to do there if you want that. Charter a small boat for the day and cruise with the dolphins (our last time out two pods swam within a few feet of us--don't interfere, just let them go on by and enjoy them) or check out St. Armands Circle (lunch, dinner, people watching) or Ringling (estate & museum) in Sarasota. Or sunset at the Venice Pier where you'll find good seafood and great views at the Crow's Nest (early dinner so you can enjoy the view) or seriously excellent Italian on Venice Ave at Made in Italy.

It's my understanding that Charlotte has undergone some sort of renaissance.

Well perhaps I should have consulted my brethren before I booked the flight! But my friend has an uncle that's lending us a house rent free so I'll cross my fingers that the weather is beautiful and focus on getting some sun.

Roll down to Fort Myers Beach one day - only 45-60 mins away...Great beach town.
