Miami South Beach Gyms

    Hi y'all,

I am visiting Miami in May staying in south beach and wanted to know what would be a good gym to go to? I am a serious weight trainer and work out in a body building gym here in the UK. Doing a bit of research I notice that there is a gym called "David Barton Gym" but this looks more like a disco club with exercise equipment, and I am guessing it must draw a very gay crowd. Although it looks nice my concern is what type of "exercise" might go on there. Personally, I prefer a body building / real gym.

I've also discovered that Gold's Gym in south beach appears to have closed down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! =0)

    Cheers!

I went to Equinox off 9th I think it was in South Beach. Very nice gym and was included as a perk with our hotel stay.

Well I am staying for two weeks there so hoping to get a very short term membership. I usually use Gold's wherever I go in the States and its usually $25 for a week.

I am really looking forward to going to Miami - its my first time. Has anyone been to; SCORE, MOVA, Twist and The Palace Bar? and/or know of any great places to go out to in the evening for a bit of a dance with a great crowd and music?

There are many huge 24 Hour Fitness gyms in the Miami area, but none yet in Miami Beach. Coconut Grove is one I go to when I'm there, and there are others. Maybe your gym has priviledges or discounts for day passes, assuming you can drive to them.

Having said that, I have worked out at both the David Barton in Miami Beach and at the Equinox. I think if you have the opportunity to workout at DB, you should. True, it has some interesting/odd/intrigueing decor (I won't spoil it for you), but it also has serious equipment. Get the great workout you need, and enjoy the various "environments" as well. In addition to the decor, there is an interesting mix of folk...bodybuilders, recently lifted faces, and celebrities.

The equinox is also a serious gym. IMHO Equinox tends to have the best trainers around, and they price them based upon their experience. I hired a trainer for a complete cardiovascular workup, including a realtime VO2 test to measure the exact pulse I needed to hit to maximize fat burn, and I really felt I got my monies worth. I felt he was truly passionate about his craft, unlike the typical trainer who often is a glorified sales guy.

Anyhow, wherever you go, please let us know what you found and what you liked/didn't like!

Oh and the dish on the clubs:

Score is a dance bar. Fun if you like to dance. Can get overwhelmed by straight women and their bf's who feel it's cool to be in a gay club, but unawares that nobody likes to have long hair whipped into their faces. Cover charges have been rising of late, it seems to me. Peoples can be stuck up.

Twist is a late night multi-bar, long famous as a late night cruise location. Diverse crowd, almost always something for everyone except midweek. Friendly and fun.

MOVA is a cool lounge with a great looking crowd. Expensive drinks though and no real dancing. Not a place to go alone.

Palace Bar is best "after beach" scene. No late night crowd. Best is the drag shows on the sidewalk on Sundays (i think).

I stayed in South Beach for ten days in November last year. Equinox were going to charge $99 for a three day pass which I would then have I renew a couple of times to make it last my visit. Crazy price. In the end I went to Crunch which was pretty good, equipment a bit old though. They charged about $135 for a week pass but let me extend that to ten days for no extra charge.

You don't appear to like gyms with gay clientele. Good for you! icon_rolleyes.gif

Assuming that we define these things the same way, you won't find a good, clean fitness facility for less than $100 a week, but don't fret. "Real" gyms with no openly queer members aren't hard to find. There are plenty of staph-friendly meathead gyms further north that will milk you for as little as $10 a day.

Thanks guys - some great advice and suggestions there.

I've worked out in very gay gyms before, even ones with a live DJ (go figure), but when i go to the gym I like to just workout and hit the gym hard for intensity. I prefer not to get too distracted from the aim of the gym visit. Conversely, by night, I defiantly want to go out and mingle in gay/very gay places.

Wow! $99 - $135 for 3 days to a week. That's crazy! They sure get their monies worth then for the casual/short term visit!

Well, I am curious about the David Barton gym and might check it out. Price will defiantly be a bit of a factor. Kinda geared myself up for prices around Gold's $25/week - ah well. You better a free towel! ;0)

You could also check out AQUA gay sauna on Coral Way or THE CLUB in FT LAUDERDALE..both have equiment to work out on,and a outdoor pool area where you can flex your muscles and be nude at the same time..

membership average is no more than $20.00 for 6 months.sure beats paying $99.00-$135.00 of your vacation money just to lift a range of weights, plus at THE CLUB your card membership is usually Honored at other Saunas around the globe.

Enjoy your time here in Miami..trust me the heat and humidity will stress you out enough, that in it self is a hard workout just to stay cool..

JIMMY: Thanks but no thanks. Granted you do burn a lot of calories doing that kind of "exercise", but those places aren't my scene. Never have been, never will. Just looking for a great place to actually workout, boring i know =0)

ATC84: Thanks - great find! Will definitely check David Barton's out one day whilst i am there then =0)

jmusmc85: I don't have any nude pics but thanks for the offer of Miami advice - much appreciated.

    Cheers guys!
