Looks like it just went through an overhaul. They kind of turned the front page into an online grindr (shows guys near your IP address location it seems).

Judging by the responses on here it is too little too late. Just like MySpace, Gay.com failed to adapt to recent trends and paid the price...

Er... yeah, I got a call about this latest melt-down this afternoon.

It seems their new splash-page automatically displays large images of members near the IP address of whatever computer displays it. Which for small towns and rural areas, is basically every gay in town. One click to get a map location and full profile of sexual preferences & etc. Without logging in.

So if you have a profile on there that you haven't checked, you may be getting a lot of prominent advertising all of a sudden. Wanted or not.

Anyone who typed "gay.com" into their computer, within 50 miles of here (probably more like 100 miles to the east) was getting a photo of me. I jumped on and deleted it all, but you can't close accounts "for now." I only used it for the local chat room, which they've eliminated. So no great loss.

I dropped that dog-forsaken site over 10 years ago and haven't looked back (though I did have the same screenname).

If they want me back on their site, they better give me lots of money and lots of free stuff. Otherwise, they can go burn in gay hell for all I care.

I remember when I first came out and gay.com was certainly the "in" place, then they came out with their "new and improved" and it all fell apart.
I was drawn to other sites like "REALJOCK"!! .lol.

I think it won't work.. they blew it way back when.

Wow. Thanks for the warning! Went on and deleted my photo (you can't delete accts??? WTF??)

I joined them all in 2011! icon_lol.gif Never met anyone on there (or on any of them except for POF --thank you!! icon_biggrin.gif) I'd forgotten about them...hopefully the fact that I don't ever go back to them makes clear to anyone looking that I'm not looking anymore, but I don't want my profile pic flashed on gay.com's front page, before anyone even needs to login. icon_eek.gif That's just a crazy decision to do that, imo.

I actually don't even remember all the sites I created accts on! icon_redface.gif OKCupid, eharmony had a gay one, there was another one for "marriage minded" guys (wow....what a dud that one was. icon_neutral.gif)

I remember gay.com being less hookup-y when I joined....there was an email once a week with articles, dating tips, etc...magazine like. I wish I could delete it now, if it's going to be "grinder" hookup ap. I've never had one of those...didn't have a smartphone before we met, and I wore out my inner whore 25 years ago, lol.

LOL, I was laughing because gay.com got so lame, and the "articles" became mostly ads. I ditched that site when I was single --- around late 2010, iirc -- because it got so bad... thankfully when you could still delete an account!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I agree with many here... this new direction takes EULA abuse by a vendor to the extreme. Beware... YOU are THEIR PRODUCT!!!

I met some good friends on there. I think the "quality" of local chat varied widely from place to place. The pdx room used to have more than 200 people chatting on a typical evening. They've organized bowling nights, video parlor nights, skate nights, etc. After a few destructive trolls and the advent of grindr and such, it was down to fewer than 20 most nights. Time for it to die.

Although I did have a quiet chat with a couple of regulars on there just last night. If I had known it was the last night, I would have made sure that I had their emails.

It gives you location .. you would think there would be some sort of option to opt out ... maybe you don't want people to know exactly where you live ... mine is several blocks off .. but still

Yeah, I didn't think you'd be too worried about it, lol. I've mentioned before that I joined a bunch of them. But wow, you never think they're going to rework all of their data into such a new business model! I bet a lot of users will be pissed that their data is now part of a hookup site when they joined a dating site.

I looked up an old email. And I actually liked some of the articles....especially "dear Richard", the advice column. icon_smile.gif It looks like they've moved all of that over to gay.net now (the email links redirect to there now.) I never did get into their forums.

Yeah, the advice column was the last good thing that I remember, too. icon_cool.gif

If you can't delete your account on one of these sites, and don't want to have your details splattered everywhere, It looks like you could change all of your details so that your account is utterly unrecognizable as you. So then it would hardly matter that you still have an account there.

    Just a thought. icon_cool.gif

yourname2000 saidHahaha....I tether through my cel phone, so my IP is in Toronto....it's showing me all Toronto guys, lol.

LOL. Just move your location to "Iceland", and set your height to 5'2". With red hair, and blue eyes. And 200 kg weight. Problem solved until you can get the account properly expunged.

My other recommendation to everyone ... send in a customer service request to be deleted. If they respond back negatively, say that you will have no choice but to investigate the possibility of a class-action lawsuit... and that several of your friends are similarly upset and are considering the same option. It will be then far easier for them to give you what they want, as compared to the remote possibility that you might sue collectively.

Does anyone know the best U.S. state for a plaintiff to launch a class-action lawsuit such as this from? That would be a helpful detail! ;-)

The location is funny. Just checked it out. Apparently online is a bunch of guys at the airport. Or maybe at this hour that's the airport hotel.

yourname2000 saidRemoved all info...changed my age to born in 1884, lol. Sent an email asking "how do I delete this acct?" ...see where that goes.

EDIT: actually, you can't remove information, only change what's there. icon_rolleyes.gif Which means if you ever said you had facial hair, you can't "undo" that...just change it from "beard" to "goatie" or "moustache", etc. No option to ever be "no facial hair" once you've had it. Lame. icon_rolleyes.gif

I am now a no-pic, 128yo, 5' tall, 404lb, "hairy everywhere", chubby alcholic with a small dick in an open relationship who wants to have sex all the time and who's interests include "beanie babies and Coronation St."

Let the marriage proposals begin. icon_cool.gif

This is the first time I've been tempted to steal someone else's photos off the web. As long as they're putting them up on their splash screen... (And it's not just the pic you thought was your main profile pic - they rotate through every thing they've got on you. icon_redface.gif )

I was thinking this might be a good look for gay.com :

Well how am I supposed to log in to be insulted by complete strangers without profiles or photos once a month now?
