The Death of the Chat Room

As I am sure many of you know, gay.com deleted their chat rooms this week. In looking for another similar place, I am finding slim pickings on the web. Some sites have a VIDEO chat room option, but few to none still maintain TEXT chat. (Or, if they do, the rooms are empty).

That being said, gay.com has been dying for years as more and more people have been using different "social media" instead of that rather clunky site.

Yet, here I am on what is essentially a Bulletin Board System -- probably the OLDEST version of online communication around. There are still a few BBS sites around... and they seem to be thriving. So what happened to chatrooms? Do you think there will be a new revival? I mean, people LOVE texting, so it's not text that is the problem. And people love anonymity, so requiring webcams isn't necessarily something everyone will jump at.

Anyone have any thoughts? Not just about gay.com, but about chatrooms in general. I mean, hey... back in the 90s IRC was thriving too....and when I checked to see what was up there, it was dead too. There seems to be a vacuum waiting for smart businessperson to adapt new tech to a potential need.

IRC is too complicated for most people. Seems most people chat on gimicky sites like Chat Roulette or Omegle.

I used to chat nightly on AOL a decade ago. But I think the novelty has worn off for a lot of people. It requires retelling each new person about yourself, or saying the same old things.

Forums are still doing well because you can respond at your leisure and there are always new (mostly) discussion topics to peak your interest.
