Last night Sharkey introduced RAD to Edith Piaf and now RAD is a fan. That led to some discussion about favorite low profile artists ending in a Dusty Springfield lovefest. So.....introduce the guy below you to one of your favorite hidden artists....someone you love but the mainstream hasn't discovered yet. Rules are you have to listen to the entire clip or link with open ears, an open mind and an open heart and then give your opinion. Then leave the next guy a video or a link to your favorite unheralded musician.
So here's my favorite lesbian singer/songwriter, Cheryl Wheeler:

    I like this thread Coach_Mike!!!

One of my favorite bands is Phoenix. They are popular but a lot of people I talk to have no idea of them. This is one of my favorite songs by them, Run run run.

    Liquid Mind: Awakening (Cosmic Sea)
Post Edit: This is a band I discovered when I was listening to a Pandora station I made Electroacoustic, after discovering, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, via Clay's profile videos.

OK, I guess we're abandoning the part about listening and commenting and then adding. That was just the teacher in me trying to set some parameters so people actually listened to others' suggestions instead of just posting their own. But this way is cool too. I'm particularly interested in hearing from some of you about local musicians that have built up a following in your area but haven't conquered the rest of the world yet.

I totally support this thread... I was waiting for someone else to answer RAD with something similar to what he posted.... so i could jump in...as i could not answer him because Pheonix is a bit too melodic/guitar/Sunshiney for me..and i have few artists like that in my database of awesome music.

I knew someone would come along and respond without listening.

I love suggesting music to people within their taste range yet maybe a step outward... The response to RAD was just NOT related. LOL..at all.

Ms Wheeler sings a good song. Thanks!

it took me awhile to understand what this thread was....

Gorgeous guitar work... floral.... very typical of the lezzies who have mastered the art of standing in front of a mic.. with only words and guitar and whatever voice they have and still leaving you with quite the impression. No frills ..just quills.

A band i've come to love that is a side project of one of my favorite bands ever.. Portishead.... reminds me of some of my favorite 70's Krautrock... CAN....

^^ Good stuff, Clay. I get a definite Jack White vibe, but more sculpted. I like.

Here's an artist I was just turned onto today via fellow RJer misterwood. American Jazz singer Gregory Porter, who lives in NYC, and is a regular performer at a club just two blocks away from where I used to live in Manhattan (had I only known then). Really liking this guy right now:

    This song slays me.

The voice is so rich and textured. You can taste and feel it. Straight to the bone.

Here's Colin Stetson. Amazinly talented and innovative Saxophonist who has done a great deal of work for alot of leading indie bands like The Arcade Fire...His solo work is amazing...breathtaking and visionary... he'll go down in history..

Checkout the studio first then if you have time..see the live video for more awe...

He records everything live in one take..

The live version shows you how unbelievable this guy is.. performing the studio version live.. no looping.. no nothing.. just him...

Then he breaks down for you how he does it

I got a crush on him.

    Patti Smith-

Her forceful opening line of her debut album "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine", sets the stage for a brilliant album -Horses.

kt8320 - Patti's the shit and her work on "Gloria" blows the original out of the water. Her best song though? Definitely "Rock n' Roll Nigger."

Anyway... here are the Pine Hill Haints with "The Spirit of 1812."

I'm not sure how I never knew about these guys until this past year, but a happy discovery.

I've known of Chris Thile since before his Nickel Creek days, but he continues to amaze.

I had to pick this song by Semisonic because it was written about the 400 Bar in Minneapolis, which recently closed and was where several great bands got their start. They started out around the same time as SunVolt, The Jayhawks and Wilco, and I love them all so it was hard to decide which band to post.

I've heard of the Punch Brothers, but not Old Crow Medicine Show. Both are pretty good though.
