I have been using Met Rx and EAS Myoplex Lite MR shakes for a while.

They're not bad, I can live with them.

My question was does anyone here have a different preference for better taste - or know of an article (preferably available online) where someone reputable hass done a nutritional comparison and taste test?

I have also been told that you can make better yourself from scratch; but I truthfully don't usually have time or patience to spend on that kind of thing unless it is incredibly simple and easy.

I frequently have pitchers of the stuff chilling in the fridge so I can just grab a glass when I need it; just as a time saver.

    Recommendations gratefully acccepted.

For a fair comparison, I've tried the chocolate versions of four different packaged shakes. For me, Muscle Milk is marginally tastier than Myoplex. I prefer the Apex shakes (a standard item at 24 Hour Fitness gyms) over both, and they have less calories than Muscle Milk's standard size. But the problem with Apex shakes is that they require vigorous shaking to distribute the protein solids, and no shaking ever seems to be enough. It is especially a problem if you like to drink a portion of the shake pre-workout and save the rest for immediately after, because the solids recongeal and since it is now open you can't shake it effectively. When I'm cutting, the clear winner is Muscle Milk Light--the consistency and texture are good, and it has half the calories and a third the fat as the standard version. I'm rarely home immediately before or after the gym, so it just isn't worth the trouble of mixing it myself, even though it would be much cheaper.

I second the vote for Muscle Milk Light. My trainer has me on two a day: one roughly a half-hour before I lift, and one immediately after I'm done with the weight routine and cardio.

I've tried many and my favorite for taste and nutrition is Isopure. They have several flavors and none taste artificial or chalky and all, at least for me, are easy on the stomach. And its pretty close to "real" food. Read the ingredients...more of a recipe than a chemistry experiment. I'll admit that Muscle Milk tastes good and has a nice amount of protein but its also fantastic marketing for a bunch of supplements and body building mumbo-jumbo you don't need.

The multi level marketing American based product Herbalife for me. Excellent for losing weight and keeping it off.

so you are lazy and want a carb and protein fix that is low fat thats easy and anyone could do it, the macro split is up to you but:

    Ground oats
    Milk
Fruit/cinnamon and a splash of Apple Juice or untol variations

    Night before:

    Place oats in a bowl
boil a kettle add hot water to the oats
    Stick bowl in fridge

next morning: throw it in a blender with desired amount of milk and/or spices or fruit to taste and blitz it. Stick it in a disposable drinks container (trust me you dont wanna find one a month later in the boot of your car!!!!!) and drink on the go or when you please.

The more fluid you add the runnier the drink is so if its for later in the day would suggest you air on the runnier side.

With the protein value of oats and milk then it pack a fair punch, the fruit will give yuo quick carb release. If you are bulking and want to add more protein (not that you would need it) throw in some dried egg white powder or use a protein added soy milk (my fav as when blitxed this resembles a McDonalds thick shake especialy if ya add an ice cube or two to the blender)

I have a two favorites... one is the EAS AdvantEdge in chocolate or strawberry (not the Carb Control formula, which tastes kind of nasty). If budget allows, I prefer all the chocolate varieties of EAS Myoplex (powder or pre-mixed), but if I have the powder, I just mix it with water, as using skim milk makes it far too thick.

I usually drink one right after my workout and another on my afternoon break at work. Keeps me from wandering through the mall looking for junk food... the rest of the time, I try to stick with real food.
