Anyone else annoyed when someone quotes a huge amount of text as part of their post?

Quoting entire conversations as part of the post makes reading through a thread very tedious. Especially if it's done only to say something like "I agree."

If people don't care about it, then just ignore this post.

I sometimes do that but I make comments underneath each quote. I have a long ass quote on the "Constitutionally..." thread yet I have comments under each quote.

That approach is probably an exception to the rule. When I quote from an article, for instance, I try to copy just the key paragraphs and then link to the full article. Honestly, when I see voluminous posts with lengthy quotations, I am inclined to skim through them, or to skip them, altogether. They say that good writers trim as much of the fat as possible. Here are some relevant tips:

Ok, I see where this is going... It's not funny, you know. Two of my friends died from reading overly long quotes.

I do that sometimes. Only reason is I don't won't to repeat what someone has said if they said what I was going to. Doesn't mean we don't care about it. icon_rolleyes.gif

YES!! I've previously complained about this, too. Didn't seem to do any good, but then it wasn't in a thread unto itself.

In fact, when I see lengthy quotes followed by a short comment I continue scrolling figuring that the comment isn't even worth the read.

maverickj_ca> I make comments underneath each quote.

That's perfect in my view. The whole "quote" construct is overly tedious, too, which is why I prefer the simpler format I just used.

Note also that I trimmed away about 3/4 of what maverick said, leaving just the meat which I was addressing.

It's called "editing" and I'm beginning to think it's a lost art. (:

I try to delete all of a quote that is not relevant to what I want to comment on, however, sometimes the entire quote is necessary especially if I have come into the forum a long time after the original statement was made and I feel the entire quote is necessary.

It is not particularly irritating to me though when people do this as the quote is usually in a different script so it is easy to scroll through it to find out what the poster wants to add.

If it has been a long time since the original statement was made, as a reader, I find it helpful sometimes to have the quote available for reference.

However, I do understand why this could get irritating for some guys, especially in some of the longer threads or when multiple quotes are used.

Seriously, when large or multiple graphic elements are quoted over and over again, it seriously wastes my bandwidth and the scrolling speed of my poor old laptop goes to hell. The thread becomes too toxic to bother with.

One of the things that amazes me about humans, is they can focus on what pissers them off, but really don't care if they piss other people off, and normally not willing to change.

Or they hate something other people do, yet do it themselves.

You know you don't have to read them, and you have the ability to leave.

If it's a continuous thread, and I at hand just can't think of anyone who does it here. I just go to the bottom of the thread, and read it from there. I don't have to re-read it all, if I don't want to, nor do I find it confusing, nor irritating.

But hay I'm here for the long run. icon_biggrin.gif
