There are many more countries where you'll be imprisoned (just not executed) for homosexual acts.

    Guyana
    Sierra Leone
    Niger
    Chad

    The list goes on...

That is what happens...when religion was under the control of fools & ignorant people...

same applies to Christianity too...Look at pope, he is against gays too...

Thought the countries listed where gays are accepted are christian nations...they don't mix religion with constitution & politics...

A true follower of any religion never hurts their neighbors, never even think about giving pain to others, not even in his dream!

Canada is a secular country. Not Christian.

Sweden and Norway are mostly atheistic in terms of population, though for all I know they may have some loose christian remnants in their documents.

Good point. That didn't occur to me when I first read the post. Religion is the problem. It promotes authoritarian top-down power structure and all tyrants need an enemy to scare the mindless masses. Though I do think Muslims are especially barbaric.

I see what you're saying Destinharbor, but I'm not sure it's that simple. US, for instance, has considerable anti-gay backlash, as we all know, despite having a formal distinction between church and State.

Norway, Sweden, Spain, Belgium and even Canada are nominally Constitutionally Christian as they have christian constitutional monarchs.

In the EU it was Spain that has led the way socially in gay liberation.

So, it's difficult to define a secular and religious state. The legal status and the social status are very different and in England it was the Puritans that, initially at least, led the call for democracy.

China, USSR, Cambodia, Albania, etc all had draconian punishments for being gay. All were avowedly atheist.

True. Looking at your list it occurs that the authoritarian aspect of the society, whether influenced by religion or another creed is still the culprit. Spain is the odd man out, being more Catholic than the other European countries, but then they have had a dictatorship in their fairly recent past and memory of that may give them a heightened aversion to authoritarianism.

I'm very sorry to hear that your friend was killed in such a horrific manner. I have already seen these executions and it makes me want to vomit to know how little we have evolved.

This. Studies and polls strongly indicate that Sweden is predominately atheist and/or agnostic.

no we have come a long way, there are many countries and races that are still behind the rest of us of humanity on the evolutionary scale, its not the human race as a whole that has not evolved, but some minor races of people. but races come and go. and even thought some are barbaric and animalistic, they still deserve a chance to grow and learn, and if they don't learn in time, they will be force to learn by the law of cause and effect.

Religion is the problem, all the rulers in the world have always used religion for war and discrimination. They basically just use 'fear, those who have understood this have manipulated people for century's by manufacturing and controlling religion
