WTF is going on with this team? Are they really that stupid to not know what they were doing. The video is now being taken down....ONE JUMP BACKWARDS for gays in sports.

What's funny is that it's actually a step forward from a historical perspective. The debate used to be too fringe to even come up in mainstream sports. The enemies were always there, but they had the luxury of not openly participating. Their homophobia was assumed. It was a given to all of us. Now it is not a given. If they hate us, they have take a stand, and now we see our enemies and our friends, and we must fight to see those who are against us fail, or in the best cases win them over to our side.

Hmm, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. Celebrities often get shuttled from press event to press event, shoot to shootby their handlers and are fed lines and talking points which they regurgitate without really even paying attention. Many of them don't book their own press-, marketing-, and photo-opps and just do as they're told, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone in their camps or in the 9ers front made them available for the video without really explaining the campaign in any detail.

Of course, they should pay better attention as to what they sign onto.

    Totally right!

So many of these athletes went into football in hopes of escaping bullying themselves. Now that they've made a living out of it, their collective mindset is, "It Should Get Better... but Only For You Straight Kids Out There."

It wouldn't surprise me in the least that the anti-bullying in general makes sense to many of them but the pro-LGBT part goes right over their heads like a Ryan Leaf pass.

All it says is that they didn't know they were filming anything associated with gay rights. They didn't say they are against it.

But the It Gets Better video from the 49ers specifically mentions LGBT teens.

This is what Donte Whitner says in the video:

"The San Francisco 49ers are proud to join ItGetsBetter.org, to let all LGBT teens that it gets better."

The OP article mentioned Whitner was the only one that explicitly mentioned LGB (or) T in the ad. At least 2 of the others claim they had no clue.
