Did the "New Year's Resolution"" crowd hit at your gym?

I am curious to see what you've observed at your gyms. I travel and, generally, attend 3 gyms in 3 cities. I've noticed that the bump in gym memberships that usually happens in January didn't hit any of my gyms (24 Hour Fitness in San Francisco and Phoenix, and World Gym in Palm Springs).

Now Gold's Gym and Planet Fitness are offering low cost/no commitment deals, and maybe that's where they are this year. Or could just be the economy catching up with people.

    What's happening at your gym?

I noticed that there hasn't been a noticeable uptick at my regular time in the afternoon (between 2-4), but if I happen to workout after 5 there's definitely extra crowding.

It was quiet for a couple of weeks now here they are sitting on machines to chat (they are always "just about to use it"), stepping over my barbell, stepping over me when I am doing situps and generally not making friends with the regulars. Still, if it wasn't for their wasted subs I am sure my gym would close icon_biggrin.gif

Yep, there was a huge influx of new members at the Gold's I go to... Makes it nigh impossible now to find a parking place or a free elliptical.

For the first time EVER! No. There was almost no change. I walked in expecting to be like last year....like they were giving out government cheese. But this year...almost no one. I still crowded as fuck. But not with n00bs.

Hey Frank - - - good seeing you again. Let's all four of us get lunch or dinner whenever we can again soon).

To the question posed: I go to a couple of gyms where the lifters are dedicated and serious. We don't see the influx of January "New Year's Resolution" people much at all. I've seen them in the past at other gyms - you can't miss them:

    * Brand new 'outfits' with all matching accessories
    * Carefully made up or spic 'n span clean
    * Looking around the room with a half-panicked / half-amused stare
    * Warming those benches - doing little if any work
    * Playing with the buttons on machines
    * Trainers leading them around the room
    * Talk, talk, talking to their friends on cell phones
    * Standing around the locker room watching the rest of us
    * Making cracks to each other - "I just HATE going to the gym!"

Funny how those people are gone by February.

YES, those rude runts that lack gym ethics are back to haunt us regulars till end of February/March.

My gym takes advantage of the whole NY resolution thing, and offers a wide variety of discounts for new gym membership, personal training, gym classes to accommodate these incredibly rude, messy and weak-willed individuals. The awesome thing is these NYR crowd only come in during the time most convenient to them i.e. 4-5pm when most people are coming home from work. So as long as I go to the gym really early (i.e. right when it opens) or really late (i.e. two hours before closing), I can avoid them and work out with peace in mind. Oh and this applied to both the gyms I had membership here in Calgary and in Toronto.

There's the typical new fat ladies this year. But I have seen an influx in some well built "hotties" that already looking like they had a gym membership somewhere else. I guess its the $9/month special the gym is running that keeps new hotties coming.

I joined my join at the end of the 2012 and thought that surely in january the gym would be pretty busy, but nope to my surprise it's the same normal faces that I see everyday when I go. No change at all.

I would have to say no -- at least, not that I've noticed. But then again, I get up at the butt-crack of dawn (I'm at the gym at 6 am), so it's pretty much the same crowd every day -- and if there was a bump in attendance, I could have easily missed it. But the place is always pretty busy (Gold's Gym in Miraflores, Lima, PerĂº).

Yes. I go to the school gym. There are a lot of morbidly obese people on the weight machines who I never see step foot on an elliptical or a treadmill. I often think in my head if they really expect the crunches they are doing on the ab machines to really do anything for them. Then there are a bunch of skinny guys who look like they came from famine stricken areas of a third world country. They look like they need food, not the gym. It's been entertaining seeing how the newbies improperly use the equipment though. Then there's this one guy who takes up three machines at a time, singing with his Beats around his ears, and dropping the weights after every set he does oblivious to the fact that he's annoying everyone around him.

It has been annoying as hell, but I think some of them are starting to give up.

I'm not sure about this year. I've been going at night. Maybe the Resolution crowd doesn't want to work out that late?

I can't say that I'd blame them, but how do they even know about me? Maybe my trainer warned them. icon_confused.gif

The Greater Wichita YMCA's always have huge promotions and we see the spike. I try and avoid Mondays at the gyms if I can.. the weekends are always lax.. things start falling about now, it isn't so bad.
