How do you grow one? Hair growth rate isn't the problem, its more about what do I shave and what don't I shave to get the desired beard?

Well, try one and see, but... I think you're absolutely adorable without a beard.

But if you do grow one, trim your neck, and your cheeks, if the whiskers grow near your eyes. If I don't shape I look like a werewolf.

Here's me at 53, over 10 years ago. I had started to have some grey, that I plucked out. I kept the beard trimmed close, this is about 12 days growth, but the mustache is a full month in length.

A lot of younger guys like you will have patchy spots. Nothing you can do except let the whole beard grow longer to hide them. You won't know what you've got until you try.

Invest in a good beard trimmer (makes things so much easier for shaping and trimming). As well, just play around with a few styles to see what looks best on you.

Shape as you see what your beard is doing. In the pic I posted I had to use a razor to raise my beard along my jawline. And as I said, the whiskers almost reached my eyes, I looked like Lon Chaney as the Wolfman, so I had to shave my upper cheeks daily.

I also had to bring my collar-line up. Otherwise the hair would have gone below my shirt collar. I'm very hairy!

Guys think a beard will be simpler, they don't have to shave every day. Well, you do!

Not only shave, but carefully shape all the places where you don't want hair.

I promise you, it's simpler to just shave your whole face every day. But, if you want that beard, and don't want to look like a homeless derelict living under a bridge, you're gonna have a lot of daily beard maintenance.

So let your beard grow in, see what shape it takes, where you're gonna hafta trim it to look good. Then get a beard trimmer (Norelco makes good ones) and select a length you like. A 4-day scruffy look is very popular, and Norelco trimmers will give you that if you want.

You're sort of at the mercy to what nature and genetics gave you as far as beard coverage. You won't be able to do every style unless you have a 100% full beard, which isn't too common.

Invest in a few trimmers and just mess around a little to see what you like. It's hair, so if you mess up, it grows back icon_smile.gif

Most men of European descent will have heavier whiskers on their upper lips and chins. The cheeks are more variable. Hence the popularity of goatees. Some men can never grow a decent cover on their cheeks.

Apparently some of my Middle European ancestry controls my facial hair, and I've had a very heavy beard all over my face since I was 12. Sadly, it's mostly white today, so I don't try to have a beard anymore. icon_sad.gif

See what your genes have given you. And that's just today, at 22. It may be different at 32, and 42.

But again I say, you are EXTREMELY attractive as you are. Not my isolated opinion, I've read the pic comments here on your profile.

If you aren't getting the attention you want I'm not sure the answer is growing a beard. There may be other, better ways to accomplish what you're after.

Still, young men should experiment, so see what a beard does for you. I'd love to see it. I just think you might have better results by focusing your efforts elsewhere, other than facial hair.

before you start on any trimming,

    1) with a new razor, shave all face very clean and smooth
    2) let it grow in everywhere, prob will get to point where its itchy
    3) see how and where it grows, you may have patches of missing hair
    4) when ready to trim, start with your neck to get bottom baseline, below chin/jaw
    5) continue trimming following line or shaving neck and let the rest grow
    6) depending how long it takes to come in, use highest setting on trimmer first
    7) once the longer hairs appear, then switch to low setting to get hairs even

You look pretty young, if you dont get results, you may have to wait a few years before you can grow what you want, your genes have a factor as well as how you did during puberty, you may have trouble with hair growing up the side of your face

There's really no right way to answer this. Beards are so individual because not only is there face shape, jaw and chin shape to consider, but also just the way genetics has your hair growing.

Grow it out, experiment, see what looks good. FWIW, I think a very short, but full beard would look great on you.

let it grow out naturally, see what length suits you best. Use a trimmer to keep it consistent at that length-- and then use the smallest trimmer size to clean up the area around your neck (unless you like it), and/ or your higher cheeks. If its patchy in specific areas you can use a trimmer to mask that by evening jt out with the rest of it (gradient esque- not as bad as if sounds if its short and subtle) or use tha smallest size to clean up both sides leading up to your mouth (assuming the patchy part isnear that area)

at least thats what i do. its a lot of trial an error really

    ^this^

It's all about the face and how full the hair grows in. If it's spotty it's not going to work. My favorite facial hair look is a full beard cut short. I had one a few years back. It wasn't difficult to keep up but I didn't like the feel of it.
