    That about sums it up.

pardon me for being overtly anal, but for such a perfectionist she missed her spot twice

I preferred Madonna's more. I got goosebumps when those gladiators came out to Vogue. Better music too.

    Well, from my perspective:
    * Good voice / nice high notes
    * Great looking girl
    * She puts in a ton of energy and work
    * Needs good songs / memorable music / good writers/arrangers

I give her a 9 out of 10...I loved it! I wish she would have done more though because it was sooo hyped up but I was pretty satisfied with her performance.

I'm glad there was no bony old man on stage this year lip-syncing to outdated pop records.

I agree. Beyonce's seemed too long, eventhough they were around the same length. Too may songs. Madonna knocked it out the park with just 4 songs. When I saw the openning I was floored.

unlike Madonna, Beyonce's songs are not really memorable. I mean Crazy in Love and maybe Independant Woman massive hits but the other ones not so much.

she basically skipped singing half the songs, letting the backup singers do it, lots of oohs and ahhs and doubt she even sang all of it live

the destiny child thing would have worked if she actually let the two poor girls sing...the one Michelle? straining to be heard.

not really very memorable, she looked good but the Super Bowl really is going to start to run out of ideas for halftime shows, the older artists are getting too old and younger ones dont have the chops. Beyond Beyonce sort of tough to come up with many other mass appeal artists that can do the show

next year its in NJ with all the cold and maybe snow...Bruce just did it but he could come back and I could see Bon Jovi doing it with maybe some other NJ/NY artists

Well, Madonna is a master (mistress?) at the spectacular open-air arena performance, I've attended her concerts (and had to wait for her 2 hours late). And of course the limitation here is that the staging has to be brought out and assembled within minutes over a grass football field, then quickly removed so the game can resume. It really is amazing what they accomplish, because other concert venues can take days to construct.

Beyoncé was good, and I think her voice is better than Madonna's. She's certainly a stunningly beautiful woman, perhaps the most lovely on stage today. But Madonna remains the most athletic of the divas, and can sustain a continuous activity level that others cannot. When you consider her age it's almost supernatural. (Did you see her stumble on the bleachers, though?)

Although I'll give a plug to my personal favorite, just cause I like her and have followed her career for over 40 years, and that's Bette Midler. I haven't seen her onstage in about 6 years, but last time I did, already in her 60s, she had more energy and put more into her show than performers 1/3 her age. And she's just funny, witty & spontaneous onstage, as you would expect, with an audience rapport the Madonnas, Chers and others don't have. Those years in the Continental Baths with Barry Manilow still show.

god I hope not. We dont need another half time show of geriatrics. I thought Beyonce was fine. Not great. I liked it better than Madonna. But overall, those shows tend to be just average in general. However its something to set up that staging, pull off a show and tear it down in just a few minutes.

unfortunately how many artists under 35 these days have the chops to carry off a Super Bowl performance. That speaks to the troubled future of the music biz. The guys want something rock leaning but because its a mass audience show they tend to pick pop but I think they have exhausted the choices. Time to go search out the senior citizens again

So want are performers supposed to do after a certain age? Die? It's so sad that people are so ageist! Madonna is still kicking ass at 54. Not sure that Beyonce or any of the young pop tarts will be able to do that, or are able to do it right now for that matter.

what do they do? They tour and play their catalog. Thats what they all do. And Madonna kicking ass? I wouldnt say that.

And the young pop tarts will do it. why? Because this conversation happens every generation. In the 80s people would ask if there were ever going to be bands like the Who or Stones that would tour for 30 years. And there are. U2, probably Foo Fighters, etc will be around forever. If they cant make a new record that sells, they just go out and play the hits.

Well they can, but you have to fnd the right artist. First, one that is williing to it. Doing that show is a HUGE risk. Millions of eyeballs on something that is live and where anything can go wrong. Janet Jackson anyone? You are right about the mass audience. They will go pop or pop rock. But in many cases, the artists that do that show are ones what need some help and need the publicity. Beyonces last record didnt sell. Madonnas didnt either. The classic rock crowd like Bruce or Bon Jovi havent released anything that sold in great numbers, but do tour. Could a Katy Perry pull it off? maybe. Would she do it? Not sure. There is a huge up side but also a huge down side.

dallas, name someone. any one performer or any one person over the age of 40 that can sing and dance the way she does in her shows? Wearing heels and sometimes heavy costumes? Selling out arenas and stadiums? If that's not kicking ass...
Maybe you don't like Madonna, we all have our likes and dislikes, and that's fine. But to not give credit to someone when they deserve it, that's just silly.

I think there are 2 types of SB Halftime shows. One is a Las Vegas, multidancer, cabaret show ( Madonna, Beyonce, BEP, Janet Jackson). The other is a hit driven musicians show with serious singer/songwriters/rockers (U2, Prince, Rollingstones, Bruce Springsteen).

I think out of the 1st category Madonna had the best show, out of the 2nd category I think Prince had the best show.

Even though this thread is about Beyonce, no one in the most recent posts has commented on the brilliance of Prince's 2007 Halftime Show performance. His musicianship was outstanding (AND IT WAS ALL LIVE), his songlist (with old hits and the foo fighters cover) was brilliant. And who can forget, as he begins to sing Purple Rain the weather goes from a light drizzle to a full on rain shower. Amazing.

Edit: Prince is a Rock God.

    she served her purpose

the whole superbowl spectacle has been distilled down to:

    money (commercials)

sex (beyonce dressed like a high rent stripper)

violence (360lb guys trying to kill each other)

the three elements that all those fat middle aged gray haired corp management types get a viagra chubb over.

I like Madonna. People who can move like her at 40? Tina Tuner did. Kylie does. On the male side you have a lot to choose from. When I said she wasnt kicking ass i wasnt referring to her performances, I was referring to her career in total.. Madge will always sell out shows. She has 30 years of hits. Just like Bruce or Bon Jovi or all the old timers. People will always pay to hear those songs live.

I was going to mention that. Prince was probably the best half time show in recent memory.

To me it was the other way around, i thought Madonna's performance was kinda boring and too long. Then again kinda bias though because I never have really liked her.
