    Hi Jocks!

Below is an artist's statement I've written for a self portrait that is being shown in a local commercial gallery up here in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada: http://www.facebook.com/events/497054097018641/

The image referred to is the photo I am currently using for my profile pic here on RealJock.

As this is one of the social networks in which I have used this image, I thought I'd post the artist's statement here. I am interested in any critiques or comments, public or private members my have.

    Regards,
    Owen Williams

    The statement reads:

    ytOwen

As an Artist I am interested in issues of self presentation. As a Gay man, I am interested in how Gay men choose to self present to each other online. This is an profile image taken with my ipod touch. I have used it to self present myself on the following social networks: Facebook, Pinterest, RealJock, ManHunt, Grindr, Scruff, and Mister. The image has also appeared in the ManHunt Daily "Top or Bottom?" competition, and on a feature story about me in both the print and online editions of  the national Queer paper Xtra. A common compliant online between Gay men, is that the photo of the guy looks nothing like the person you meet. This makes sense as human sight it binocular, and the camera is usually monocular. The ipod touch has a fisheye lens which compounds this issue further by distorting physical features. My intention in making this photograph was to create an image which did not distort any physical features. I started by taking photographs of grids to learn about how the lens worked, and observed how the lens distorted the grid when the ipod was held at different angles, then moved on to self portraits. After over 3,500 attempts I produced this image. The photo was taken blind at arms length against the wall of the CBC building in down town Whitehorse, while minutely adjusting my posture. Originally titled "Me being butch. I'm not butch" it's now titled ytOwen after my online profile.
