In his book Debating Same-Sex Marriage, John Corvino deals with this issue quite well. The book is highly recommended. It is a point/counterpoint debate with Maggie Gallagher (yes, THAT Maggie Gallagher!!).

(dark blue) Polygamous marriages allowed under the law [1,2]
(blue) Polygamous marriages recognized under customary law
(light blue) Polygamous marriages performed elsewhere recognized
    (gray) Legal status unknown/ambiguous
    (pink) Polygamous marriage illegal [3]
(red) State constitution criminalizes polygamous marriage

[1] India, Singapore, and Sri Lanka: illegal in all forms, except for Muslims.
[2] Federal Eritrea: law bans polygamous marriage but certain countries and regions with Sharia allow it. Muslims only may legally contract polygamous marriages.
[3] Mauritius: polygamous unions are not legally recognized. Muslim men may "marry" up to four women, who do not however enjoy the legal status of wives.

The Wiki graphic cited by Pam thoroughly debunks the "slippery slope crowd."

Simple logic seems to baffle some people.

    And he is GREAT!
Corvino does a terrific job rebutting her "reasoning" and "arguments."

Imho* They understand choice, but place the reactive choice on the sin of the gays as an attempt to manipulate the logic. They understand reason but arrest any progress to suit their communal culture.
They kill their innocence and virtue by laying claim to it in the first place.
