I've never played rugby in my life (except for maybe a month in PE class back in high school) but I'm really interested in learning and playing.

Guys in Vancouver: Are there any clubs that would take in a complete beginner? Or are there any places where I can take a class to learn? I've tried googling but there doesn't seem to be too much information online.

Anyone and everyone else: How did you guys start out playing rugby?

I'm not in Vancouver, but: just about any club will take beginners. You may not start in the highly-skilled positions, but they'll be more than happy to have you.

The British Columbia Rugby Union, which administers rugby in your area, has a page listing 67 clubs in the province. As far as I know, there are none that are predominantly gay, but you should be able to find something anyway:

I started playing rugby because I was tired of just going to the gym - I wanted something more, and rugby seemed like an interesting enough option. As it turns out, I enjoyed my first few practices so much that I helped start an IGRAB team here in town, and I'll be a Crusader to my dying day (and then some).

Thanks for the link! It looks like my university actually has a rugby club. Maybe I'll shoot them an email, if I can get over the fact that most of the guys in the pictures have a lot more bulk than I do..

It's great that you're enjoying it a lot! How old were you when you first started playing?

    You're welcome for the link!

Don't worry about the relative lack of bulk. Rugby is as much about skill, speed, and stamina as it is about sheer strength. There will be a place for you on the pitch, even if you're smaller than the other guys. (I say this as someone who's 5'6".)

I started playing rugby just shy of my 28th birthday. Wish I'd started sooner.
