Carrie Underwood is weeping because of your response. icon_biggrin.gif

OP - most of the songs from Sarah McLachlan are sad.

    Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
    Maybe someday you'll look up,
And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one:
    "Isn't something missing?"

You won't cry for my absence, I know -
    You forgot me long ago.
    Am I that unimportant...?
    Am I so insignificant...?
    Isn't something missing?
    Isn't someone missing me?

    [Chorus:]
    Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
    I'm all alone.
    Isn't someone missing me?

    Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
I know what you do to yourself,
I breathe deep and cry out,
    "Isn't something missing?
    Isn't someone missing me?"

    [Chorus]

And if I bleed, I'll bleed,
    Knowing you don't care.
And if I sleep just to dream of you
    I'll wake without you there,
    Isn't something missing?
    Isn't something...

    [Chorus]

    Starry, starry night
Paint your pallette blue and gray.
Look out on a summer's day
With eye's that know the darkness in my soul.
    Shadows on the hills
    Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land.

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen; they did not know how --
    Perhaps they'll listen now.

    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen; they did not know how --
    Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you
But still, your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do --
But I could've told you, Vincent:
    This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you.

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen; they're not listening still --
    Perhaps they never will...

This is a beautiful, sad song written by Joni Mitchell. I could feel the sorrow oozing the first time I heard it. Must have played it about 30 times over. k.d. lang does a stellar version too!

    This is k.d.'s version:

I love my country...but yeah, it's depressing most of the time. Maybe because it's so "real" or something?

And any song that has to do with the military always gets me.

Anyway, I think the three saddest songs are:

    Christina Aguilera - Hurt

Katharine McPhee - Say Goodbye (you must watch the video)

Boyz II Men - Song for Mama

This one gets me every time I hear it! The song is specific to me though so others might not find it sad.

    Neil Young - Harvest Moon

    Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
    Just like children sleepin'
We could dream this night away.

But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night.

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
    On this harvest moon.

    When we were strangers
    I watched you from afar
    When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

    But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
    I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye.

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
    On this harvest moon.

Lyrics wise I think another sad one is Fast Cars - Tracy Chapman

Eva Cassidy's cover is surely one of the saddest songs I know, especially in light of her early death:
