    Here is the Wikipedia article.

Basically, Labor Day is a day we're supposed to recognize the importance of working people, particularly those in unions. In reality, it's the signal that school's about to begin, and it's a good day to have a barbeque.

Don't let 'em fool ya, it's a celebration of childbirth. Which is why it happens in the 9th month. Traditionally, women who've given birth since the prior labor day save the umbilical chord from the birth and serve it during the High Labor Dinner Meal.

Labor Day is analogous to the rest of the world's May Day. Only we have Jerry Lewis, sleep-deprived and weeping, begging for funding for MD research. Is he still alive?

Yep, Jerry is still alive. He commented on the death of Merv Griffin, and Perez Hilton blogged about it here:

We have a Labor day here in Holland to, it is a part of our socialistic inherege, but i really ever could figure out why everyone has to have a day off at labourday.....
I imagine labourday as a day where everyone works, the unemployed, the sicks, disabbled, pensionados: you name it, as a day to remember that everyone wants to do his/here part on society and can do his/here part....
But somewhere on the line labourday is ended up in a day without labour.... Strange, but have a nice day all
