Indications so far point to a tragic automobile accident, nothing sinister.

Sometimes I do think this site needs a 'sarcasm' smiley or something.

Sad news in any case. icon_sad.gif

The AP has been reporting this all day as a homicide.

The automobile accident was apparently unrelated (except that it was his vehicle) and far away from where the body was found.

Also, "a person of interest is in custody."

    Weird and weirder.

    RIP!

    http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2013/02/homicide-suspected-in-death-of-openly-gay-miss-mayoral-candidate/

    Noteworthy:

LGBTQ NationMcMillian was CEO of MWM & Associates, described on its website as a consulting firm for nonprofit organizations. He had recently served as international executive director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Jimmy Hammock, the fraternity’s international president, praised McMillian in a Facebook post for making “an incredible difference in his community and in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.”

A statement from the historically black fraternity said he had secured the first federal contract to “raise the awareness of the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS on communities of color for the Fraternity.” It noted that Ebony Magazine had recognized him in 2004 as one of the nation’s “30 up-and-coming African Americans” under age 30.

Really??? That wasn't in the early reports I read. Now that could be very explosive, if there was a political motive, or something related to his sexual orientation.

    From the Clarksdale Press-Register:

    http://www.pressregister.com/article_7d3bdf3c-81a2-11e2-8346-0019bb2963f4.html

The newspaper reports the suspect is likely a 22-year-old man who was driving McMillian's SUV when it crashed head-on into another vehicle (other driver uninjured). Police did not indicate whether there was a relationship between the suspect and McMillian.

The police noted there were no other passengers in the collision, and that the man advised police on where they could find McMillian's body. The body was found beside a levee.

    Hookup gone sour perhaps.

I thought either that, or an unfortunate carjacking.

Yes, someone else crashed the vehicle and Marco McMillian was not in it.

    http://www.ibtimes.com/was-marco-mcmillian-killed-because-politics-family-gay-black-mississippi-mayoral-candidate-thinks-so

IB TimesBut McMillian’s families have their own theories about his murder.

“I believe it was political,” one family member told the New York Times. ““Maybe some people didn’t want him to run. Maybe he was a threat. They wanted Clarksdale to stay the same.”

A former classmate of McMillian’s said the mayoral candidate was loved in the Mississippi town of about 18,000 people.

My condolences, but c'mon, family member(s). Table those "beliefs" for after the prosecution and defense builds their cases. 22-year-olds in Mississippi are barely voting, never mind going overboard to do much of anything for "political" reasons.

A very horrible tragedy indeed. I wonder if this possible homicide is also a hate crimeicon_question.gif What does the Mississippi GOP have to say about this horrible crimeicon_question.gif

Jackson Clarion-LedgerSlaying of openly gay Clarksdale mayoral candidate not a hate crime, police say

CLARKSDALE — While the slaying of openly gay Clarksdale mayoral candidate Marco McMillian has sparked national debates about Mississippi’s tolerance of homosexuality, those close to the drama say the act was a crime of passion, not a targeted attack.

Nor, they say, was it tied to McMillian’s political ambitions in this small Delta city best known as the birthplace of the blues. It stemmed instead from a personal incident, either between two lovers or between a gay man and a straight man whose signals got mixed.

What needs to be debated, Clarksdale residents say, isn’t how to stop intolerance but how to stop crime.

McMillian, whose age had been given by law-enforcement authorities as 34 but whose family members say was 33, was found dead Wednesday morning at the base of the Mississippi River. His body had been dumped more than a day before its discovery, allegedly by Lawrence Reed.

Little is known about Reed, 22, except that he graduated from Broad Street High School in the nearby community of Shelby and had since moved into an apartment in Clarksdale.

Friends of Reed told Memphis television station WPTY that the two recently had met at a Clarksdale bar and became close. Then, sometime either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, McMillian made sexual advances on Reed, the friends said, adding that Reed is straight.

The Clarion-Ledger couldn’t reach Reed’s friends, but it’s also the version of events investigators were told. After being hit on, Reed allegedly snapped, strangled McMillian, then drove McMillian’s SUV to the levee west of Clarksdale and tossed his body near the river.

Friends of McMillian, however, say the two men were romantically involved and quarreled immediately before the slaying.

“They were having an affair,” said 18-year-old Carlos Jones. “They got to tussling.”

Afterward, Reed allegedly drove around in McMillian’s SUV until 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when he collided head-on with another vehicle on U.S. 49 near the maximum-security Tallhatchie County Correctional Facility.

The article is too long to copy and paste. For me, I don't care if they were involved (as the prior post's article stated). That doesn't even come close to mitigating the murder then burning of the body. Just because someone got mad. What? Was he going to be exposed?
