Does anyone else here play badminton competitively? I used to compete until I came here in college in the US. It's really hard to maintain my performance because no-one here plays well, it's even hard to find the real badminton equipment! I really hope that more Americans get to know more about badminton as a competitive sport rather than just grandma's backyard game. Also it's really frustrating when someone gives me this weird smile when I say "I play badminton". Please if you have the same frustration, let's chat and spread out the word

I do... (well i used to back in the UK), one of our gay badminton groups had 2 teams in the local league and there are loads of gay European 'social' tournaments that take place throughout the year, so I used to go to quite a few. I will get back into it when i return to London at the end of next month, but i do understand that in the US, it is not widely played at all and believe me many people say they play and then it's as you describe it - nothing more than "grandma's backyard game".
BTW if you get the chance to travel to Europe then check out http://www.gaysport.org/ as they have a calendar of sports events including badminton......and it will be played at both Outgames in Copenhagen next year http://www.copenhagen2009.org and the Gay Games in Cologne in 2010 http://www.games-cologne.de/en
Good luck in promoting in the US... but it may prove to be an uphill struggle if you cannot even get the right equipment!!!!!

Badminton was the one sport not involving egregious bodily injury that I was good at as a child. I am the only person I know who loves to play, so it makes it very difficult.

There is a gay badmintion league in Toronto. My partner played in it for a year. He loves the sport because it involves quick movement and smashing the birdie. I play against him at our cottage, but I don't have his reflexes or his hand-eye coordination, so the result is the same as when I play tennis against him (ie I never win).

Because bitter people like to make comments whenever they can; must be hard to be a Nobody. Back to the subject, it was fun when I played it in the Philippines; problem was that it the birdie got stuck in the roof. Even little kids are not going to climb unstable roof tops to get one stupid thing. We just continued on with rocks!

I'm a competitive player and I compete nationally but I'm not really out so I don't want to be too specific as I'm a little paranoid. Anyone follow pro badminton? That would be insane if I could talk badminton... with gay guys lol. Here are some pro players and pictures: Fu Hai Feng (jump smashing) along with Cai Yun. They're a doubles team from China and Fu currently holds the fastest clocked smash somwhere in the 340's (km/h). Peter Gade is one of the relatively few Europeans to crack the world's top five in men's singles. He was world number one by his early twenties and is currently somewhat of a veteran at 29 or 30. He's Danish. Kenneth Jonasson is one of my favorites because he's not the typical build of a men's singles player (which is 5 10 - 6 3 and lean). His game is unique and he is a grind king... one of the fittest players on the circuit.

I'm from Asia, where badminton is obviously a much bigger deal than it is in the US. I played competitively in school as well! But yeah, when I headed over to the US for college, I found that there isn't really much interest here in the game, which is a pity! Badminton provides a pretty intense cardio workout, if I do say so!

I completely love badminton. used to play a lot as a kid and in college, but since I came to states have completely lost touch with it. Don't know even a single person here who knows how to play it. Leave alone playing not many people know what it is. Not sure if I can play it competetively anymore, but it would nice to find some people to play with on a regular basis.
