My book character needs to stumble into one in Manhattan. Like, are there townhouses in the Meatpacking district where he might find oneicon_question.gif

Manhattan seems to have cleaned itself up so much in the past couple of decades it's getting harder to write about crazy, scary, city stuff. I don't want cobblestone and boutiques; writers need crime and fear! icon_wink.gif

I didn't know there were any house parties in NYC without drugs.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Harlem
East Harlem has the highest violent crime rate in Manhattan.[7] The area is patrolled by both the 23rd Precinct and the 25th Precinct of New York City.[8] The neighborhood suffers from many social issues, such as the highest jobless rate in New York City, teenage pregnancy, AIDS, drug abuse, homelessness, and an asthma rate 5 times the national average.[9] It has the second highest concentration of public housing in the United States, closely following Brownsville, Brooklyn

Asking that on a health and fitness forum is slightly ironic. Oh well!

The tough area south of Central Park used to be Hells Kitchen. I had a college friend living there back in the 70s. Visiting her was a trip. She was brilliant. I was 18 just starting school, she was 18 and in her Masters in Psych. She used to make us crepes at 3 in the am.

    But that area now?

    $3,700/month for a 1/1. Yikes.

$9,100,000 not a bad price for seedy.

Never heard of that term... I must have been way too overly protected and sheltered in high school and earlier

Brooklyn's actually got quite a bit of that sort of scene. Brownsville's got it too.

    Exactly!

No one wants to read about poor people doing drugs...that has become such a boring cliche...icon_rolleyes.gif

Once at a Denise Rich party I took a celebrity, I forget which, on a tour of the eight bathrooms in her East 50s rental triplex penthouse, and no one was doing blow in any of them - and this was over 20 years ago.

college dorms, east village, and there are tons more that i've been to in the city. I don't think its just one area its everywhere in new york. you can spot people casually smoking pot out on the streets and parks.
