As in 8 out of 10 ? I was watching Desperate Housewives the other night and there was an episode featuring the gay couple. They were discussing the chances of a gay man's getting a date with another gay guy and the conversation went something like "well Barry's a five whereas Gary is a nine, so no".

I think it's a rather strange thing to do but I have heard muscle guys do it.

na, to much effort to judge people like that and a 5 can always become an 8 with a good personality so I never get them right.

I've heard a couple of guys rating women that way, but have never heard any of my gay friends or acquaintances rate anyone on a scale.

oh damn I do sometimes when I'm bored, but it's just a short way to say those thing we normally say like that guy is ok, or not cute, or cute, or really hot, or amazing, we normally say those things about guys all the time, I don't think a scale makes any difference.

I don't rate guys with any sort of numbering system.....but there are attributes I admire (and actually expect to find) in guys I meet - and those include a good attitude, outlook, goals, accomplishments, positive health, consideration of others, sense of humour.

Nah, I just rate them on dick size. At least it's an objective and repeatable manner of testing subjects.

-5 to +5

This is actually a major pet issue of mine, that I try to indoctrinate people about whenever I get a chance.

When you talk about making ratings from 0 to 10, there is not a clear "neutral" point. After all, when rating attractiveness, what do you give someone who doesn't turn you on or off? 5? 7? Different people have different intuitions about this.

When you use -5 to +5, you can use 0 as the clear neutral point: this person is neither ugly nor attractive, he simply doesn't stand out one way or the other.

Please spread the word, and from now on rate all men on a scale from -5 to +5!!!

[NOTE: this rule of thumb can be applied to specific attributes, as well as overall rating, so works for those of you who say that you rate personality, intelligence, etc., all separately]

I don't rate guys by a number. But come to think of it I have noticed how gay men do this. I don't know enough straight men to know if they use this system or not. I think I have heard women use it before.

And by the way, the gay couple on Desperate Housewives is a bit annoying. They seem like a trivial addition to the show. I guess the gay writers of that show had to capitalize on an already gay show by adding them into the DH mix.

Unfortunately, I'm a big math nerd. So whenever conversations turn to this topic among friends, not only do I doggedly insist that people use -5 to +5 (see my above post), but I also very easily get caught up into tangents on statistics.

For example, everyone looks better on some days and at some times than others, therefore everyone really has a DISTRIBUTION of scores, not a single score. This means that even if person B has a mean score that is a little higher than the mean of person A's score, the variance may mean that this different is not statistically significant. If the variance in each person's attractiveness is greater than the difference in their means, then the two are really "equally good-looking".

I've actually used this argument when complimenting guys I've dated.

Him: "Do you really think I'm as hot as __________?"
Me: "Well, the variance is greater than the difference in the means."

That response really makes a guy's heart go all a-flutter, let me tell you.

I don't think the straighties are nearly as analytical on things. If she doesn't blow chunks and has tits...they're good to go. Not sure why we spend so much time assigning arbitrary factors to the laws of attraction. You either are or you aren't to a person...and it's different for everyone.

I not only rate guys and girls on the 1 to 10 scale, I also keep track of how many guys and/or girls I would do in any given location.

for instance, this morning at the gym there were 7 guys and 9 girls that I would do. The guys averaged an 8 on the hotness scale (with one guy being a solid 9, which helped the curve immensely), while the girls only managed a 7, mainly because there were three reasonably hot ones working out together and while they were probably 8s on the hotness scale, they were all dropped to 5s because they managed to be in my way at least 4 times...

can anyone say OCD?

I'm sick. First time I can think of I've ever had strep throat. It hurts to talk right now, so I keep it short.

What do you rate him on your personality scale?

Personally, I never have and can't remember ever hearing my gay friends use a rating scale. It's usually "he's hot" or he's not.

Oh my gosh. Sorry you have that. I used to get strep 2x a year when I was a boy! Now I'm blessed to not get it as an adult.

You you still manage to keep your humor as it hurts to talk (type).
