I've always had very strong fingernails, but lately they seem to be splitting and breaking. I don't like to file them down to the skin, so does anyone know of any supplements that might help restore nail strength. Or, any thing that may be the cause of weak fingernails. Thanks.

I don't know, but mine seemed to get unusually thin and frequently split for a few weeks this winter. It seems to be over with now. So, a temporary thing, whatever it was.

The vitamin BIOTIN will give you quick results. It's cheap and available at any pharmacy.
5 mgs(which may read as 5000 mcgs) is a good strength.

Take a look at webMD for details.

As written above, Fruits and Vegetables are key. During the winter months you may be eating less of them and so that's when you'll often notice brittle nails.

During winter you're also getting less Vitamin D due to less sun exposure and that lack will cause brittle nails. This is a good time to supplement.

After a visit to a dermitologist this summer, I got the biotin recommendation too. It will increase nail strength and growth. I've been taking it for a month, and yes, 5,000 or 6,000 is what you need to see a difference. I get my hair cut every 3 weeks and my hairdresser mentioned how much more my hair grew.

To help splitting nails, and to make them grow smooth (mine have little ridges), he recommends smearing a little Aquafor just below the nail on the cuticle.

Nails typically take about 9-12 months to regrow if you are trying any of these things. The biotin speeds the process up a little.

Supposedly it is good for nail strength/resilience . . . and unlike Biotin, it doesn't make your hair grow more (which was a problem for me and I went from on-the-edge-of-too-hair to beastial!).
