Today Valerie Harper disclosed her terminal brain cancer, bravely facing a 3 month prognosis. Whether you're a "Mary" or "the Rhoda," why is this so upsetting?

My manager told me about Valerie Harper this morning and it put tears in my eyes. I love the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda Morgenstern is one of my all-time favorite tv characters. The episode "Rhoda, the Beautiful" strikes a chord in particular, and is a must-see for those who were once overweight. Of course, the episode where she marries Joe is a classic! Who else but Rhoda would go through the NYC subways in her wedding dress after Phyllis forgets to pick her up? Valerie Harper also had a small role on a Columbo episode, "The Most Crucial Game, playing a call girl who thought Columbo was one of her tricks. Sad news indeed.

it's so sad and a little weird for me because i've been watching knots landing with a buddy from the beginning... and we just last night watched the one where laura (constance mcashin) who was on the show from the beginning and we're in season 8 or 9 here... laura is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer... was such a depressing episode... she was healthy otherwise, happy, and then bam... and i was thinking about the whole you're gonna die soon thing and then a few hours later i read that rhoda was dying

it's always sad when someone you know and like from afar dies but i think it's completely freaky to think you're healthy and then you find out you have a few months left...

i loved her reaction... she was so positive... and she said something like we're all terminal... no ones getting out of this alive...

it's also terrifying that some things are out of our control... no matter how much we might exercise and eat well... she's right... in the end something is gonna get us
