im just not offended when the word gay is used in other contexts. sometimes i use it myself! i think that people need to stop being so sensitive, its obvious when someone is trying to be offensive and insulting and when theyre not.

This. If people are being malicious, that is one thing, but very few are when they say, "That's gay." Too many people are oversensitive and scream discrimination when none actually exists.

Definitions of words change over time. Gay didn't always mean homosexual. It used to mean happy. I suppose it still does, but you'd beW hard pressed to find anyone under the age of 70 use it that way. In most cases were people say "That's gay!" it rarely has anything to do with sexuality or something actually being gay. I know it's hard to believe, but not everything is about us.

Also, if you tell me not to do something, I'm only going to want to do it more. Yes, that includes using the workd gay to mean lame or stupid.

Haha. I agree. People are way too insensitive. We're totally ok with gay having an alternate, completetly independent, positive meeting (happy), but assune its prejuducial if some uses it to mean stupid. It's prett ridiculous.

I disagree. Language matters. And actions matter. I grew up in the South and couldn't understand why blacks were so offended by the "stars and bars." To me it was no different than cheering for your school team. I then went to a college that had an Indian as its symbol. When the Indians going there objected, I was offended because I thought we were taking pride in their heritage. (We dropped the symbol.) The point is, a LOT of people use the word "gay" to mean something negative and that isn't good for us. A little political correctness can help reveal who's with us and who isn't. So we can keep pressure on those who aren't. This progress we're making involves an effort, guys.

I was more or less threatened on here for using the word queer,, even though we have used it for over a decade, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", "Queer as Folk" or even the rallying cry so many of us have chanted "We're here, we're queer, get used to it."

I think people are overly sensitive at times... it wasn't like I used the word faggot or homo.

The fact that gay is used to mean homosexual means that it is derogatory to use it to mean "lame" or "stupid" or "inferior". That's why it became the phrase that it is - because people think that gay people are inferior.
Replace the word gay with jewish or black or asian. Is it okay to say that?

It doesn't bother me. Ive grown up using it and hearing people use it.

However, words like 'faggot' and 'queer' bug me, so I guess it's the same principle.

WAYS TO USE THE WORD "GAY"

If you think something is dumb, you can call it gay.
E.g. I think that outfit looks gay.

If you are speaking to a person who is gay whilst also wanting to mention how something looks dumb, synonyms like "faggot" can be used as a replacement.
    E.g. Hey faggot, that's a gay outfit.

If reading these things have irked you then no it's not good to use them in that way.

McQueenReplace the word gay with jewish or black or asian. Is it okay to say that?

I have heard soooooooooo many people, including asians themselves, say "ughh that's so asian".
I haven't heard people say "ughh that's so black" but black people still call each other the "N" word which is taboo for everyone else that is not black.
I suppose it's taboo because it's derogatory to say it if you aren't black but if you are, apparently it's no longer derogatory.

So in that instance people could argue that there's nothing wrong with saying "that's gay", at least if you are gay yourself.

I personally don't say it myself, but just thought to add to the discussion.

Used in any context other than to describe an individual attracted to their sex or to describe "happy" (because as stated above that is what it use to mean) is derogatory.
