Except the name is pronounced differently so it doesn't rhyme.

It does indeed rhyme, depending on which Latin you're using: classical, medieval or Church. I chose the long "i" pronunciation, as I was taught in school. Re-gī-na Va-gī-na

That is one pronunciation. But it requires you pronounce the same letter "i" in 2 different ways within the same phrase. I think the equally acceptable convention I chose is more entertaining. Re-gī-na Va-gī-na

Well it would be Re-gee-na as the original latin pronunciation because that's how the Romans said it. It was their language so they win.

In which case they would have said "Re-gee-na Va-gee-na", also a rhyme, so I still win. You should know I rarely surrender a point. And given that I've read classical Latin since I was 14, 1st Century Rome a favorite study of mine, it's not an idle opinion I propose to you. The actual pronunciation of classical Latin is still debated, the language having morphed over 1500 years. No living person knows how it was actually spoken, and naturally no recordings exist. But I would contend the combination of identical vowels and consonants in those 2 words are conclusive.

BTW, it's a pleasure to engage you (McQueen) on an academic level, and not a personal one. These are the kinds of exchanges I enjoy. icon_biggrin.gif
