My honey and I are just about to leave on our first real vacation in a long time. Which got me to thinking, what's the best place on earth you'd ever been?

depends on whether you want the sand and sun or you want cosmo and culture ...

I adore Stockholm, it's simply one of the most beautiful cities in the world. If you're travelling in winter time, the Ice Hotel in JukkasjÀrvi in the north of Sweden is absolutely amazing too! Dog sledding, scandic saunas, northern lights, etc. :)

For an Urban type vacation, I really liked Sydney Australia. I like Hawaii too. I guess it depends on where you have been or are from. I imagine if you are from one of those places you might want something very different.

The most relaxing vacation I had was an Atlantis Cruise to the "Mexican Riveria" It was so easy cause you just lounge in luxury and do what you want and eat all you want when you want.

If you wanted something a little more low key and private I am not sure where I would choose.

I've only really had two real vacations, though I have traveled a lot for work. I think that the best times I've had were with a small group of riends (6 or so) on a small yacht (45' or so), an archipelago, and no particular agenda.

I still adore Vancouver Island more than any place I've ever been. I admit it's because I spent many months as a child there every year and so I have a lot of great memories.

But I still enjoy going back for a week every summer to catch salmon, hike, and enjoy the great little fishing towns. It's a beautiful place, and very secluded where my family and I go.

A friends Beach House at Plaka on the small - still somewhat rural - Greek Island of Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades.

    The beach at Plaka: http://www.naxos-greece.net/beaches/plaka10_small.jpg

The Webcam at Chora Naxos: http://www.naxos-greece.net/

The largest city and capital of the island is Hora, with about 10,000 inhabitants. The main villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Chalki, Koronos, Sangri, and Apollonas (I think I got them all).

The Windsurfing and Kitesurfing are world class, the temperatures are always moderate, the beaches are gorgeous.

The scuba diving offshore is incredible.

One day we rode our bikes back into the mountains and bought a lunch of local wine, cheese, tomato's, cucumber, olives, and fresh bread from a small village market. Then we sat down under some olive trees to eat and watch the view down the valley and out to sea.

Every night we would sit down at one of the outdoor patio's of some Taverna and sip wine with fresh baked bread and cheese as we watched the sun set. Then they would light the lanterns and we would have dinner by candle and starlight.

Tourism is there, but it hasn't taken over the place yet. We have thought about buying a place there; but we are afraid we just wouldn't be able to get there frequently enough to use it. The people we met were incredibly friendly.

We stole a week there while Iain was on a pass, still stationed in Iraq.

    Rob

    Depends on what you like...
For me for beauty and history Venice Italy is the most wonderful place on earth
    ...
But for an all-round friendly active place to go is Stockholm Sweden

For scenic beauty and a relaxing trip - I once took a small ship cruise up the Inside Passage - between Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland. It included going into Princess Louisa Inlet - which Conde Nast calls one of the 10 most beautiful places on earth, and I'm inclined to agree.

For something busier, but still more romantic and sensual, Santa Fe is a great choice. Beautiful scenery, great art, fascinating history, and a welcoming culture.

I had a month in Thailand and it wins hands down to anywhere I've been before. You can live like a king and the people are beautiful. From north to south the place just blows you away.Sure, you may take risks that you wouldn't at home, but thats what life is about and the freedom you experience from our western lifestyle is well worth it.

    Highlights-

The wildlife, rode elephants, played with gibbions, played with baby tigers, sun bears and the list goes on.

Rules what rules, hang out of trains, ride on the top of cars and jeeps,no seatbelts,no helmets ever.

The people, nothing is too much trouble, just ask and you shall receive.

If you have ever woken up on Phi Phi Island, you'll know the feeling,if you havn't.What are you waiting for.Hundreds of tropical islands to discover.

And the shopping, you name it you can buy it in Thailand. Some off the biggset shopping malls in the world.Shopping is more fun down in the markets. All the fake stuff is there and you can get some very good ripoffs.Look for the artwork, they will paint you anything.Fancy the Mona Lisa in your home, they'll paint you one and you won't know the differance, all for under $200.

Thai massages $10-$15 an hour have one everyday you're there. They can hurt but a little pain is worth the healing.

As you can tell I fell in love with the country.I'm going back at the end of the year,if I can get the time off work.

Wow, this is a seriously well-traveled group, thanks for all of the recommendations! Stockholm and Italy are at the top of our list for 2008, and we're planning to spend Christmas in Cabo. Anyone been there? Recommendations for things to do, places to dine?

In my most recent past (as in less than a year ago) South Africa is stunning. We got to travel quite a bit of the country - Durban (fantastic boys on the beach), safari in Hluhluwe, Capetown, and then Stellenbosch wine country. Amazing place!

St. Thomas US and British Islands are great. New York City is an awesome place. Lot's to do and see.
Grand Canyon, have hiked it rim to rim. Awesome place. Hiked the many trails in Yellowstone, and Yosemite. I like the great outdoor vacations best. They're workouts, but are a blast.

Salvador/Bahia, Brazil: unique culture, rich history, sexy beauties, sun, sea, hot parties, ... you name it

Rio de Janeiro too, gorgeous mountains, fabulous cityscape, beauties on the great beaches and in every alley way ... Sao Paulo is great too with gorgeous friendly people and pristine tropical beaches a short excursion away ...

Brazil is the friendliest place I've been to; the people are cosmopolitan, have no attitude, in addition to being gorgeous.

Cruising the Mediterranean to Istanbul, Land Cruiser ride to Mount Everest base camp in Tibet, Trekking and safari in Tanzania and Kenya, Backpacking in Yosemite high country, sightseeing in Paris, Granada, Venice, Rome, Lisbon, all rich and unique experiences that I was fortunate to have on my great vacations. Even taking short drives around the beautiful northern California coastline can feel like being on vacation.

It's so beautiful and SO fun! Me and my BF went there last winter and had a great trip in the very gay-frinedly Manuel Antonio Nat'l Park region.

And like everyone else i like hawaii and europe and so america and thailand...what's not to like!

In Green Acres Eva just "adored" a penthouse view!

I think that great vacations can be almost anywhere many times it's the company that makes the trip memorable. Great weather doesn't hurt either and by the way.... is important too.

Just got back from Australia. My matie and I went snorkeling along the Barrier Reef off Port Charles, Cairns - and then skiing @ Mt Buller, about three hours outside Melbourne. It ranks as among one of the best.
Skiing w/out a shirt in warm weather was fantastico !

    I MISS MY MATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a month long jungle trek through Sumatera with my bf. It was amazing and challenging in so many ways. We ended staying in a hostal waking up each morning to this view:
