Samsung Galaxy S 4 hands on: Nice phone but new tricks disappoint

The Galaxy S 4, Samsung's new flagship phone, is supposed to make you feel like a wizard — wave to toggle between pages, point to get previews. It sounds amazing ... in theory.

In reality, the impressive-sounding features of the Galaxy S 4 — Smart Pause, Smart Scroll, Air Gestures, Air View, and so on — won't exactly blow any minds. When I tried them out, they failed to work half the time.

Did you watch the keynote? It was just dreadful to no extent. I have never seen something so cheesy in my entire life.

I don't really care about gesture controls. I don't even use them on my S3. But Android Jellybean (both stock and Samsung's TouchWiz) is very mature and offers a fantastic user experience on the S3 and S4 hardware.

The only thing I really like so far about the S4, from what I've read..

    - IR blaster
    - 8 core processor
    - Better camera and photo software

Other than that, I won't be upgrading. I have the international version of the S3 with a quad core processor. So it should be sufficient to run processor intensive apps for a couple more years.

This is a better hands-on review..

Stupid question but is that literally 8-processors?

And another stupid question: Given that cooling is a limiting factor in high end performance laptops how is the issue handled in a cell phone?

It's a "winter-use" cell phone. Warms your hands.

In regards to this review, it aligns well with Siri reviews. Both of these little 'tricks' aren't worth squat, but it won't negatively impact sales. Not at all.

The Apple fan bois were all wet when they announced 4S and Siri failed to deliver. Reviews were much worse for iPhone 4S than what I'm seeing for the Galaxy S4, but the iPhone still sold well.

Along comes the much-anticipated Galaxy S4, and the Apple fan bois are screaming about how shitty the S4 is even though they've not held one in their hands. No surprise there, but they should know not to be surprised when, once again, the Galaxy wipes more of Apple's marketshare off the map.

No it's two quad core chips. However it will vary from region to region, for instance the international GS3 had a Quad Core processor while the North American GS3 had a Dual Core processor. It can also change depending on th carrier, so processor wise you dont even know what youre getting when you buy a Galaxy phone. Regardless no software will take advantage of that so it will look better on paper than anything else.

With the difference that everyone started to copy the shit out of Siri after Apple announced Siri. The same way they started to improve te pixel density of their screens after Apple announced their retina displays. Samsung has not done anything that would make anybody want to copy it. They are a hardware company who loves to build cheap looking devices while adding software that simply sucks.

But it's not Apple. And you know what? For some really stupid people, that's enough.

I guess I'm stupid for owning an S3.

Also my car has copied design traits from other more expensive automakers. I guess I drive a stupid car too. My fashion choices are also stupid because everything is an affordable take on another brand or designer that did it first.

And you're just proving that Android fan bois are even more blindly fanatical. BTW, do you have a quote of those Apple fan bois "screaming" about the S4?

I think Apple overcharges for what you get on most products so I don't have a favorable view of the company.

While the iPhone is right alongside competitors price wise the computer line is pricey. And iTunes is a joke. I can get the same music on Amazon for less and it still loads to iTunes just fine.

Why? I've been doing research on the two different ones this morning, and the new Samsung Galaxy blows the iPhone 5 out of the water at every turn. The only reason I was considering the iPhone 5 was because I didn't want an mp3 player and a phone to carry around. Then I found out I can sync iTunes to the Samsung Galaxy 4. Sounds like a pretty obvious choice to me.

That's because the 5 is not a competitor for the G4. It killed the G3. Once the 5S or 6 or whatever comes out, then compare.

The G4 is a competitor for whatever other phones are currently on the market.

In another example the new BMW 3-Series is a competitor for cars like the Lexus IS even if the Lexus one of the oldest designs in the segment and scheduled for replacement.

Galaxy phone owners remind me of the guys who purchased a Kia when what they really wanted was a Lexus.

To make the accurate the S3 would cost far less than an iPhone 5.
