This was great news, was just going to post too! Glad you got the word out.

USA Today, had a great article on the same subject:

It is amazing how one's heart and views can change when the people affected are real and not strangers.

Great news. The more people we have supporting us, the better. His past views are unfortunate, but In the words of Harvey Milk...

“Every gay person must come out. As difficult as it is, you must tell your immediate family. You must tell your relatives. You must tell your friends if indeed they are your friends. You must tell the people you work with. You must tell the people in the stores you shop in. Once they realize that we are indeed their children, that we are indeed everywhere, every myth, every lie, every innuendo will be destroyed once and all. And once you do, you will feel so much better”

Sometimes someone near and dear to you needs to come out before you realize the error of your ways. This happened with Portman, and he's changed his beliefs. The point is that we have a powerful ally on the Republican side. Maybe he won't be an activist for us, but a prominent member of their party coming out in support might cause others to do the same down the line.

I feel that this is how the country as a whole is shifting its views on the LGBT community. As more LGBT individuals, no matter what part they identify with, feel more comfortable sharing who they are with the world as a whole, more of society will stop seeing being gay, bisexual, transgendered, or whatever it is as a foreign concept. Once people can see that there is someone they come in contact with on a regular basis is LGBT they can personalize the issue. At that point it isn't "those gay people" want to get married, it's "my sibling", or "my friend", or "my coworker". It is much harder to tell someone you care about that you think they shouldn't be an equal under the law than it is to tell that to a faceless group.
