BOXER'S RANT VII: White guys wear Black!

This particular blog is not so much a RANT but a query to understand.

Colors are a definitive portion of our culture. They help us to define a great deal about people, places and things. Our society has even labeled ethnic groups and/or cultures by color(s). With that said, I know a considerable number of boxers, most of them Caucasian males of various sexual orientations. Yet, I've observed that an overwhelming majority (97% of them) have a consistent innate desire to wear black boxing gear ALL OF THE TIME! "WTF is that about?" I used to think "imitation is the deepest form of flattery" thus denoting that white boxers wanted to be like black boxers so they wore the colors that closely resembled them, but I've been told on multiple occasions such is not the case. So there is obviously more to it. I was recently informed that it's a contrast issue in that black looks good against their near opposite skin color. Again there has to be more to it than that. Because this is something that crosses all sexualities be it str8, gay, bi, trans or other I'm looking to better understand what drives this particular genre of men to predominantly display one singular color in a definitively masculine combat sport.

I don't think it matters at all.

Men tend to like blue, black and red. Women tend to like purple, pink and yellow.

It's visible across sexual orientations AND race because its more of a gender issue than anything.

Personally, I always liked black gear. Once you get used to it.. you kind of just stick with it.

I also don't think that being black makes you a better boxer.. I think having skill and discipline makes you a better boxer.

Ummmmm I really don't think that the color of someone's clothing has anything to do with race/ethnicity. Just more of a preference.

I dunno, could it be to also mask any blood, so the boxer doesn't appear as injured and lose with a TKO decision?

I have a confession to make. When I wear yellow it's not because I like yellow...

It's because I have a secret innate desire to be asian. In fact, everything I wear represents my inner struggles. When people wear hoodies to the gym, they aren't actually cold... they have a sexual fetish for being choked, THIS IS REAL.

WOW! At last getting responses out of the masses. First off guys, you’re reading this wrong this was not meant as African American boxers are better than all others. It is as I said… simply an observation that I have noticed. And also no, I’m not writing this to stir up race issues.

@RadRTT – Thanks for adding to the study.
@TheQuest – That was a response that another friend told me.
@Kevmoran – Yellow is also my favorite color in the ring. It’s a rare color that you seldom see boxers wearing in the ring, thus I have adopted it as my color of choice. In fact on a psychological level it energizes me when I wear it in the ring.

Getting back to the topic at hand; I thought carefully and went to many friends before posting this. Here are some of the other responses that my Caucasian friends gave me:
“#1. White people tend to be more conservative. It's a choice that is defined by norms in this country. #2. It could also be cultural ancestry – many minorities come from warmer climates and the sun probably makes them happier hence they choose clothing with richer colors. Whereas Caucasians come from colder climate regions and choose dour colors to match their moods. #3. Black is also extremely masculine, boxing is a masculine sport – so there can be an ignorant adherence to an invisible male code."

I have to say, I didn't realize "black" was considered conservative… and here I've been voting liberal democrat for decades. Now, while his second theory does sound plausible on a psychological level, I'm not completely convinced and I have no idea what to make of the third one. It sounds like something some wanna be jock made up as an excuse when a friend noticed that all he wore was black gear in the gym.

I have one more response from a boxing aficionado friend. So please continue to add your comments.

You literally have to be kidding about this.

That's like saying I like to wear boots because I'm Northern European and my ancestors needed boots to trek through snow, so I have an innate need to wear boots.

Not to mention, since you mentioned it I've looked at a few pictures of boxers, and I didn't even remotely see what you were talking about. Most of the white boxers were wearing white trunks with blue or red trim.

I think you've taken too many blows to the head if you think wearing black boxers is more than wearing black boxers. Black clothing has always been sleek, cool, etc. Should Johnny Cash have been 'The Man in White' because he was white? No. Should Batman have a white cowl and cape because he's white? No. I find black boxers create greater contrast than white boxers and show off definition more.

OP! Interesting observation! Wouldn't this be a much much better world if we all evolved to be intelligent, conscious enough that we wore clothes resembling eachother's skins because we all loved eachother just that much icon_cool.gif

Well seeing as no one else has anything insightful or positive to add to the topic I’ll add this final comment that was given to me. “Black trunks were traditionally the color for challengers, not champions, so maybe that has something to it, too.” I conversed with a few other boxing aficionados and they could neither confirm nor deny this fact, but it’s interesting none the less.
For many of the white guys that I box and get to know after a few months I usually end up giving them different colored gear to liven up their ring wardrobe. A few of them have added it to their collections while others have remained stead fast with BLACK only. To each his own, still variety is the spice of life. I guess not everyone can pull off various colors.
