Overhearing Religious Conversation

I'm sitting at a coffee shop right now listening to a youth pastor ministering to one of the youth members. I don't like the anger welling up in me. I'm normally not angered by listening to people talk about their faith. I guess I just remember being in church and feeling so guilty for being gay. I just don't know how else to react to someone saying "you won't be happy without god" or "you'll never know joy like you can experience with jesus" because I found so much misery in embracing that walk. I just needed to vent. I hope others are willing to share their thoughts and stories.

I reminded of a saying my late Mother had to explain that Minister:

    Misery Loves Company

    Stop eavesdropping!

Obviously the pastor would say that someone would need the church to find happiness. the pastor would have a very small congregation if he(?) lets people know that the can be quite happy outside his church.

Oh I remember that well. I was just a kid, but when the clergy presented all the conditions required to get that unconditional love I smelled a rat, or several.

I DO understand your anger....I too was raised with those same beliefs......and I stuffed it and repressed it for 37 years of anger and pain......I came out and a burden was lifted.....but I now have NO tolerance for the teachings of a hateful, bigoted system contrived to force some sort of obedience....FUCK THAT! I am no freak or a mistake, god is perfect and made me the way he needed me to be.....and no human fool has the right or the might to change me...icon_smile.gif

When I worked as a waiter, I consistently had to take a banquet party for a very conservative christian "cult" out here in So.Cal. The things they would say literally baffled me, and I had to maintain composure while waiting on them. During a Christmas party they had, they were talking about how "Frost the Snow Man" was an allegory(didnt use the word, as I doubt they knew it) for gay sex and should be removed from their current playlist. They also jumped from that to Rudolphs nose representing the devil...

However we also had another pastor come in every Sunday for a gay bible study group, and he renewed my hope in religion. It was a pretty diverse group of people as well, so was interesting to see them come in and talk about theology.

Very much polar extremes, but I've found its always best to laugh/shrug off the extremist and embrace those who are actual Christians as opposed to religious zealots. Granted I don't have a strong religious past, so my feelings/opposition to it are not rooted there.

I just get up and walk away when I hear people going on like that. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech and choice. Unless they are intentionally speaking at me, then it's really none of my business ... grab your phone and start talking to your friends about why gays have a right to marry and how religionists (my own made up word) are trying to take away those rights ... maybe they'll leave.

The one thing I've struggled the most with after coming out is seeing how the 'church' has treated the gay community. The blinders, the hatred, the 'no so Christ like' way they treat loving and caring people. I think so many people grew up being told the world was black and white and then found out there's a lot of gray out there.

My grand daughter had her first communion on Sunday and I went to her church (which interestingly enough is the first church I attended when I came to California, it's a small world sometimes) but I felt very uncomfortable. This from someone that was extremely active in the church and help a spiritual leadership role before coming out. Every person in the congregation knew me by name and less than a hand full reached out to me after I quit going. Yep, my whole take on the organized religion in this country nose dived. My faith remains, but it's based on what I believe, not on what I'm told to believe by those who have never studied any type of theology.

I don't hate religions, I just think they are all cults. Does that still count?

    What bullshit.

    re·li·gion
    /riˈlijən/
    Noun
1 The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods.
2 Details of belief as taught or discussed.

Now are you talking about the 1st definition or the second?

    We're talking about the second.

Remember, as an RJ member who doesn't give a fuck about what others think, you must hate everyone who's lives are less miserable than yours.

I was bullied relentlessly, and the religious abuse was just another form of that bullying. I was bullied by other kids, my dad and the church. All I will say is, it's left some very deep scars.

timberino said "you won't be happy without god" or "you'll never know joy like you can experience with jesus".

    This statement is completely misleading...
Based on this comment, I can understand that these priests or pastors or whatever, don't know much about god...
Here in India too...it's common...most of the priests do not teach how to live a good life to their believers...they always say...leave everything to god, ask for mercy, pray for god, you'll be lost if you don't believe in god etc.,.
These comments makes me sad and sometimes anger too...

I tried to avoid hearing it but, sometimes they put up loud speakers so that people who live couple of blocks away can also hear their voice...(fortunately, some people complaint to police for loud noiseicon_smile.gif

What I say is, just ignore...ignore it just like the pastor ignored the real meaning of god... ;)

Note: Jesus never said...you will not be happy without god, but he did said...you'll be unhappy if you don't love others,
living in good direction is the god's path...when you're living in a good path, you don't need god because you're already a god in a human form icon_smile.gif

I am a Christian who likes men - an anathema to much of the Church world, but regardless passionately loved by God Himself.

I believe God loves me period, and wants to have a forever relationship with me. I believe that He is not at all put out by the fact that I like men, but is absolutely opposed to anyone choosing to hate me because I do. That said, He also would not want me to hate them back if they do.

BTW, Did you see Chad Allen, a gay man who has posted on this Board, in the movie 'The End of the Spear?' Best protrayal of a compassionate Christian on film I think I have ever seen.

I hear ya. I still have a lot of rage about religious crap I had to endure as a gay kid growing up. I get really annoyed when I hear someone going on about 'jeeezusss' or w/e. My whole family are fundies, and they were fundies before there were fundies. Like Holly Roller fundy. icon_rolleyes.gif

The most interesting experience I had around it all was watching the church burn to the ground the day I was to have been Baptized. No shit. icon_eek.gif

I feel ya. I used to love my religion because I was taught that we should love everyone, (And that honestly is a beautiful message) but after seeing how some religions could hate so much, it definitely has me torn.

There definitely is hypocrisy in many religions. But there is also hypocrisy in every man.

Take from it what you may.

as simple story if u can understand about me :

I was born in a homo-killing country & liked girls since childhood but at some 15 ,I started liking MEN & I was told by A Bishop ,whom I told about me being gay ,
    he changed my world :
he said , if a prostitute like magdalene ,a tax collector like matthew can be jesus's disciples then what have I done wrong ,if Allah gives osama heaven , then God would give me a bigger place, wouldn't it ?
no ones a sinner in gay ,its just a written text ,god doesn't discriminate & would always love me if I love others & help others , for god we are all his children , so going to church & shouting the name of god don't make sense, instead god lives in our heart & not anywhere else
everyone is wrong in the world, don't listen to people, they impose their own laws ,but just follow righteousness of truth coz god gives truth & the truth that I am gay is a gift of god to me ,its between us & not anyone else

that day I became a born again christian ,& I'm still gay ,coz I know god loves me

sadly in 2008 he was kidnapped & killed by Jihadis , he surely would be proud of me , really I believe there is god,coz even after living in conditions were thousands of gays are killed & I'm still living maybe god wants to use me as his voice to other gays ,I love him & its not mandatory to believe in god ,if u do good things & be helpful ,u accidently do what god wants , don't be upset with what pope or others sayfaith comes from heart ,not by a pastor,& god loves us unconditionally
