Humanity never ceases to amaze me.

"Aaron Jackson, one of the founders of Planting Peace, bought a house that sits directly across from the church's compound six months ago. On Tuesday, March 19, he and a team of volunteers are painting it to match the gay pride flag."

How awesome. Interesting to see that he used the original colors instead of the updated version of the flag.

On the one hand I think it's very cool that someone took the time and spent their resources for that. On the other, I wonder how I'd feel if a neighbor of mine painted their house in rainbow.

I just google-mapped them and it shows the westboro building with that godhates... sign on the side of the building facing the neighbors' houses. Looks like a code violation but I don't know. If I was a local homeowner, I'd already be pissed just from the signage. I'm not sure I'd be any more pleased if someone decided to escalate a battle of the tacky.

I guess I think it's a wonderful idea; but maybe it should have just stayed an idea.

Here's the google street. the rainbow house is on the left side of street on the corner (not painted on this link) http://goo.gl/maps/Ch6Xc

It's not as if the house is in Larchmont. Freshly painted I think it looks great. Wouldn't want to see "our flag" weather and peel, though.

The only thing I'd change is the signage on the front porch - that should be hanging a bit more discreetly on the mailbox since the paint job gets the message across. But then again the block isn't strictly residential, is it? And perhaps by making it appear more like a commercial structure the zoning re the paint colors, if there is any (doubtful since, again, Topeka ain't Larchmont) might be a bit more lax.

Giving a group of hardcore trolls the proverbial middle finger is, unfortunately, playing right into their hands, regardless of whether or not they believe the bilge they come up with.

Nonetheless, it's very pretty against a stark winter background. I kind of want to lick it. Child instincts kicking in I guess (colorful = tasty, right?) icon_razz.gif

OMG - OP beat Metta! http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/3092694

This is happening with increasing frequency - I myself beat Metta out on Valerie Harper's brain cancer by over a day. Hope he's okay.

I'm guessing there's no homeowners association there.

Not required for keeping a neighborhood nice. Residents of non association properties have municipal measures of protecting their property values against one rogue mortgage holder with a beef.

All that's needed are good architectural guidelines incorporated into city codes which are then enforced by code compliance officers with violators brought before the code enforcement board. Sans timely remedy, heavy fines can be levied, running $25 or $500 per day.

Associations can sometimes foreclose on a property when fines go unpaid, while cities can lien properties, clouding a person's title to their home which can make selling a bitch. Wherever I've owned property, code enforcement was extremely well done and I've never felt the need for an association to maintain properties.

And this mentality is why fags are picked on so much, cause they don't fight back and are so afraid to get in their bulliers face.

And if I were a sane neighbor I'd be more concerned about the WESTBORO CHURCH being on my block than a house painted like a rainbow.

If westboro has the freedom to picket funerals with Aids Cures Fags signs, then someone has the freedom to paint their house and damn color they please.

    Ok now who wants brownies?

And that's the mentality of a tenant. Why would someone who rents give a flying fuck as the value of the property where they live.

    How very selfish of you.

That's the mentality of oppressed people who riot in their own neighborhoods, smashing the windows of the stores where they shop, looting their next door neighbors when the electric goes off, burning cars on their own streets so that their own school busses can't safely pass the next day to carry their own childen to get a God damned education.

Fuck the neighborhood. We have our principles. Here. have some milk with that brownnoseie.

You're honestly comparing trashing neighborhoods, stores and cars to painting a home the colors of a pride flag??? icon_rolleyes.gif

Seriously, it wouldn't bother me at all if some one painted their house in rainbow colors in my neighborhood. It's a free country, you should be allow to paint the house you buy with fucking money you earned any damn color you want. That is the main reason I will never live in an area where there is a home owners association. As long as you keep your yard clean, and you are not a criminal character terrorizing the neighborhood it's none of anyone's damn business what color you paint your house. If you don't like neighborhood, either don't move into it or move out of it. I hate it when people move into a neighborhood and then try to impose their personal guide lines on other people, they make for terrible neighbors.

You want to fight them, you fight them at the funerals. You counter protest where they protest. You don't shit where you eat. Like I said, it's bad enough that the neighbors are dealing with a hate sign on the building and I'd start there with city ordinances to make that organization clean up their act, to be good neighbors, even if they are complete scum.

I think flying a gay flag on that property would be completely appropriate. Flying 10 flags would be wrong. As pretty as we might think the rainbow is, look at that house in context with that lovely little well-kept neighborhood. They have created an eyesore for people who have put hard earned money there. That's wrong.

Try doing something like that in Boca Raton or even in Wilton Manors and your neighbors will go nuts on your face.

Do I need a permit to paint my house?

Yes. The painting of 75% of a Building or Structure shall be in one of the colors on the Miami Beach Facade Review Color Chart or a lighter shade of one of the colors on the Color Chart; colors not on the Color Chart may be utilized only for purposes of emphasizing architectural elements of a Building. Please contact the Building Department at (305) 673-7610 for permit information. For information regarding the Color Chart contact the Planning Department at (305) 673-7550.

it amazes me how Republicans bitch about how there are too many laws and rules but they move into neighborhoods which set up guidelines and rules for how they will live in the house that they bought in the neighborhood

This isn't even about rubbing it in WBC's faces, or trying to start a fight. It's about memorializing those kids who committed suicide, and to help show those that might that the world is not such a bad place. It's about invoking the memories of all the AIDS sufferers whose deaths could not be mourned in peace.
