A guy named James Oliver Seevakumaran was planning on pulling fire alarms at his dorm at UCF to get students to come out so he could shoot them. His roommate talked him out of it and someone called the police and as they were closing in he decided to commit suicide. They found a weapon and explosives in his room.

We're all kind of freaked out about it. I just can't help but think that we need to have a conversation in this country, not about guns or mental illness but about how we treat each other. Every person who has decided to massacre people has had nearly the same profile, a loner isolated from society. It seems to me that these days everybody's on their phones texting or on the web and no one ever takes the time to say hello, have a random conversation, ask how people are doing, etc.

There is an increasing sense of isolation in society. I was talking with a group composed of therapists and they were commenting on how they wish they could've reached out to this person before he made all these plans. It's just sad that we let people be relegated to obscurity to the point that they commit suicide or start a massacre. They just need someone to care about them and because they feel the world is cruel to them they decide to take it out on the world. I understand why they do these things because of my upbringing, the difference is I had cheerleaders in my life to lift me up during the bad times.

I heard about this on the news in passing, I did not realize that he was planning to pull the fire alarm and shoot people. I don't really think that isolationism really has anything to do with it. There are lots of loners, but they don't go around random killing people. My vote is on mental illness.
