why didnt some rich queer or television network offer an x-prize for someone to come out and get married live on television?

would have been a huge spectacle. they would have made a fortune

I hope it's a brand-name player, and hottie, who we'd love to have on our team. And not some has-been in search for a second act of publicity.

Oh, and no punter or place kicker, please.

It will happen sooner or later but I suspect this is all just rampant speculation. We heard about a month ago here in Canada that an active NHL player was about to come out and plays on the iconic Montreal Canadiens. So far, nothing.
And to the guy who asked the NFL player not be a kicker - please don't be so juvenile. Not being up on NFL, I can't remember his name, but the kicker for Minnesota has made headlines for supporting gay marriage rights - and he's gorgeous, straight and apparently, also Canadian! (I love my country.)icon_biggrin.gif

I think he said it, because it would be too stereotypical if the first player to come out was a whimpy kicker/punter

Why doesn't he just do it now? And stop being so dramatic about it. If he's worried about fans, he should just do it now because it will be an afterthought come August, the loser he does it to the start of the next season, the more of a distraction it can become

This will shatter the egg-shell thin masculinity of many arm-chair quarterbacks. They'll probably all cry.

I feel like there should be a thread for taking bets on who it will be if he does.

Whenever someone in the NFL decides to come out for their own reasons, I hope it isn't someone like Tebow or Brady Quinn. I hope it's someone who can play and not just be a poster boy. If the first guy is a pretty boy/bench warmer it'll be less powerful than having an actual starter at any position.

And whoever bagged on kickers/punters, c'mon....that takes a lot of skill to perform under all that pressure. Most team's kickers are their point leaders and perform a really difficult task under intense pressure. Those guys are definitely athletes. Go tell Chris Kluwe that he's not an athlete.

It needs to be a starter.

Either way though, he's gonna make good money if he does. Think of all the opportunities that will be thrown at him if he does come out.

Plus, he'll be my new boyfriend obviously haha

Well the report says that it's someone who's considering coming out and may continue to play. That means its someone in the latter part of his career to me. May be a guy who thinks they may not make a roster as is. If its a guy on the bubble, does that make it more likely that a team signs him for pr value? Would he be doing this in his prime? Who knows and who cares. The more barriers like this that break down, the better I say.
