Notice the bridge in the background? I believe that was Henry Flagler's doing when he developed south FL.... Down to key west. Needless to say, it's no longer functioning. Still cool to look at tho.

You went at the right time---and to the right part of the state. Right now, it is COLD here in Central Florida. Those swimming today here in Orlando are tourists for certain! The locals were all bundled up!!

Looks like you had tons of fun. Great pics and you have some nice bodywork going on there, Mister!!

Yes, about 45. Bahia is one of our bicycle ride pitstops, shortly after we cross the 7 Mile Bridge. Though for us bicyclists Key West is still a few hours away, not 40 minutes.

That is indeed one of the Flagler railroad bridges from the early 1900s. After the railroad tracks were washed away during a 1935 hurricane it was decided to abandon the train line and deck the bridges over for automobiles, since work had already begun on the planned "Overseas Highway", the engineers now converting the idle Flagler railroad bridges for vehicular traffic.

But that particular bridge was a trestle design, and too narrow for a 2-lane roadway, unlike the flat topped construction used for most of the other Flagler railroad bridges between the keys. So they built the new road high ON TOP of this trestle, as you might be able to see.

The missing span is to allow boat traffic, and to prevent anyone from trying to cross it. I rode that thing several times on my motorcycles, a bit scary with a steep climb at the SW end, and open guardrails along its very narrow length, until the current US 1 bridges were built in the 1980s that you drove.

A number of the old Flagler bridges were left in place, too expensive to demolish and considered historic. And some were converted into fishing piers. There are signs on that trestle bridge warning boaters below of falling debris, as this one is getting pretty decrepit.

Bahia Honda is my favorite place to go and chill (when I have a free moment in my week that is). The water is beautiful and uber warm in the summer time.
