So, I am going to Hawaii this June.
1- Having to travel more than 8,500 miles, and
2- Going to the US for the first time,

I said wth I should at least pass by NYC for a couple days.

So, here's where I need your help.
I am restricted by my Hawaii time / budget, and that doesn't leave me with much more for NYC.

Can I get recommendations on good hotels / B&Bs / motels in Manhattan that aren't too expensive and are in good and safe neighborhoods? (I know NYC is pretty safe relatively, but I am looking for cheap places to stay, so safety is a constraint I guess). I checked trip advisor and some other sites, but I thought I'd get advice from you guys as well.

Another option is the couch surfer thing, where people host travelers in their homes. Any experience with that?

A friend also mentioned that if I want to visit a city on my way back from Hawaii, San Fransisco constitutes "less hassle" than NYC and is very beautiful.
Any ideas on this choice as well?

And finally, a budget of US$ 1.5k for 3 nights, 4 days in NYC, can you give me 5 things I need to / can do? (Budget includes accommodation and food)

    Thanks guys in advance icon_smile.gif

Try "AirBnB" for low priced accommodations wherever you go.

    Couchsurfing is hit or miss.

Some things you need to consider to refine your budget:
Ground transportation: Hawaii you may need a scooter, a car, or depending upon how long you're there you could just shuttle and then hoof it. In NYC or SFO public transportation is the way to go.

Consider saving some budget to do some paragliding in Hawaii. It will take your breath away. You will cry tears of joy.
