What's everyone else's experience of being gay in the South? Is it improving?

I'm leaving the south... and I do love it here in many ways... but when I contrast it to the North where I last was, it's just not for me.

I love New Orleans! Great city! As to living in the south? People say Florida isn't part of the south so it's cool here! Never had any issues on being gay

Being gay in the south is no different than in the north. You are well accepted in the big cities and not accepted in the rural areas.

Houston Mayor is a Lesbian, if that isn't proof enough I don't know what it.

I don't get why ppl make it a huge deal of us being gay in the south. From all my years of being out and living in one of the most republican counties in Texas (Montgomery County- birth place of the Texas flag). I have never being discriminated for being who I am. To me, there's no other place I could ever ask to live in.

This thread reminds me how fortunate I am to be living in New Orleans, LA, USA.

I'm not from the area of the South I live in now; which is pretty isolated from more social gay locations, cause I'm unable to drive there... so honestly, idk. Got no prior South to compare this to. Don't know about ya'll, but the South I live is too slow and homely for my wicked urban gay ass. Bet someone has it better than me. icon_confused.gif

I kind of chuckle at the NOLA comments. I live about 4 hours northwest of there in probably one of the most backwoods places possible in this state.

Years ago I lived in Shreveport and I loved it there.

Not where I live now lol.

I'm escaping to NOLA for vacation but not until the following weekend. the bf and I are going with a bunch of straight coworkers. they're all good people. That's one thing I'm thankful, the area I live in may suck, but the job (coworkers are awesome).

There are some cities in the South (like where I live) that have comprehensive anti-discrimination laws and a very supportive atmosphere. The South tends to be more rural than other parts of the country and rural areas are frequently not welcoming. As a region, the South is probably the least LGBT-friendly in the country, but there are some notable exceptions like Atlanta, Columbia, Asheville, Durham, Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors, Miami, New Orleans and a few others.
