It is called geophagy, and many animal species do it.

Many people consume minerals in pill form or take bentonite or kaolin for improved digestion. It can be used to treat diarrhoea.

Children and pregnant women tend to be the groups most given to geophagy. It is not that strange and it can aid detoxification and treat poisoning.

Yeah, but it's one thing to do it as a form of detoxification, but quite another to eat dirt just to keep from feeling hunger pains.

Eat dirt or spend a life tight feeling hungry.

Hunger can drive you to do almost anything.

It is really really sad...Haiti is just few hundred miles away from one of the richest countries in the world...& yet it seems like little or no help comes from them...
They spend unimaginable amounts of money in military..
considers themselves as the proudest nation in the world...

On one side, they are suffering with excess food & on the other side these are eating dirt just to fill their stomach :-(

& the saddest part is why people are making fun of other peoples agony?
You have every right to ignore their suffering but have no right to insult or make fun of them...

This is the very reason why your leaders are ignoring you!
This is the reason why they(your leaders) don't do what they tell or what they promise...
You are to your leaders just like those poor people are to you. (You make fun of them, your leaders make fun of you...it is as simple as that)
And people spend hundreds and hundreds of hours debating about their leaders in TV's, pod casts, radios etc.,. & As long as you people didn't realize this simple fact...you all live in ignorance & always wonders why you were not looked after by your promised leaders!

Please get off your soapbox, plus you type like you're not even in the US.

There's so much poverty in this nation alone (the US), that we should start fixing the problems here, first and foremost.

    Yes I'm not in U.S.
Yes I know there is so much poverty in U.S.
I'm just stating why your country is in the situation as today...
& I stated poverty in terms of hunger & food, not money!

It always troubles me when anyone in the U.S. states that the U.S. is becoming a third-world country or is plagued by poverty.

101 countries and a VAST majority of the world's population have an AVERAGE GDP per capita by PPP (true income is probably less) of less than the U.S. individual poverty threshold. According to the World Bank, 3.14 billion live on less than $2 a day.

Most "impoverished" people in the U.S. live better than all but the richest elites in true third-world countries. Although "food insecurity" is supposedly a rising problem despite an obesity epidemic, the actual incidence of death from starvation in the U.S. is so low it isn't even officially measured (estimates are about 120 per year).

Yes, income inequality in the U.S. is rising, and many live in conditions which seem unnecessarily poor for a nation this rich, but to compare U.S. poor to any third-world nation is absurd.

That being said, the U.S. is consistently cited as the most charitable country in the world with $72 billion in private donations going to foreign aid according to the Hudson Institute, not counting our official government aid. In total we may not be #1 in aid per capita, but we do a hell of a lot more than most countries.
