This is great. Let the Republican Party, Conservatives and the Right Wing self-destruct over this. It only reduces their political power. On the local level they may still prevail for generations yet in some bigoted rural pockets, especially in the Old South, but nationally they are sinking. icon_biggrin.gif

“I'm a Republican,” Bauer told the crowd. “Let me say to my party: If you bail out on this issue, I will leave the party and I will take as many people as I possibly can.”

Maybe then the Conservative Party become decent.

All talk no action. They are so power hungry and are on a race to the bottom but if they break away they will have to face that they are in the minority which they can't seem to grasp.

I'd rather opt for extinct. There are dozens of other issues besides gay rights where US Conservatives are the political Do-Do's of the 21st Century.

Gay rights, women's rights, contraception, abortion, voter rights, world imperialism, immigration, workers' rights, gun ownership, drug use, separation of church & state, minority rights, etc, etc. The Conservatives are wrong on every major issue of our time.

What will they call themselves? The "Tea Party" is taken by crazy hat wearing old people, and a really awesome band from Canada. The Pissed Party maybe?

The Nazis were a minority party before they took over.
IMO there is going to be a coup in this country within the next few years. These people are angry and they have guns.

    According to the article:

“The vast majority of the GOP base believes that marriage is a non-negotiable plank of the national platform,” said Perkins, president of the Christian conservative Family Research Council (FRC). “If the RNC abandons marriage, evangelicals will either sit the elections out completely, or move to create a third party. Either option puts Republicans on the path to a permanent minority.”

[Editorial note: actually it would probably put the Republicans on the path to winning critical elections provided they moderate their extremist stands--see below]

    My take:

At this time, I think Perkins and his ilk are strictly saber rattling. In the short term, they are going nowhere because there's nowhere to go. However, they are rightly scared. They know they are losing ground and it's going to get worse. In the long term, they will have to make a choice: either (a) stay with the Republican party because the party, even when it eventually moderates (which it will to remain a viable party), it will remain more conservative than the Democrat party, or (b) leave the party and then sit elections out or start a third party. Homophobes face difficult choices. And it's a damned shame. ;)

Here's even better news. Whatever, they do, it benefits gay people, liberals/progressives, and Democrats. So long as they stay in the party and their extremist views dominate primaries, Republicans will increasingly lose critical general elections. On the other hand, if they leave the party, the Republican party will moderate more easily and more quickly. Such moderation will, in time, almost certainly embrace gay rights, including marriage equality. Even a cursory look at the country's demographics points to the necessity and wisdom of such moderating.

It must be a terrible thing for the homophobes and "Christian" right to realize that they have lost the battle. No, they will not go away immediately and there will be setbacks from time to time for gays, but the grand homophobic-"Christian"-conservative coalition is crumbling. The turning point was last November. Scaring the electorate with the specter of marriage equality no longer works. Thank God/dess!

BTW, in case you don't know, the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the Family Research Council, of which Perkins is president, as a hate group.

Here's another choice quote from Perkins:

"We believe the evidence shows … that relative to the size of their population, homosexual men are more likely to engage in child sexual abuse than are heterosexual men."

Can you believe hateful idiots are still preaching such nonsense?

To read more about the Family Research Council go to the Southern Poverty Law Center Website:

yourname2000 saidI have a feeling many, many moderate Republicans would love that to happen....they want their party back from the crazies so they stand a chance of winning another election at some point.

Since last November? You bet! Although they won't say it publicly.

Indeed! They are now paying the price for selling their collective soul to extremists. They are reaping what they have been sewing since the days of Reagan.

However, the party isn't really dead. It will morph. It will necessarily moderate, but it's going to take a while.

ArtDeco- You bash Republicans all the time and call them less than human. I make one joke, you report me.

You are a grown adult, you don't need to go reporting people every time someone calls you on something, which you yourself has done many times.

Disregarding your impossible grammar, I report members here very rarely, and not for jokes. You win the prize today.

Please quote me where I said Republicans are less than human. My late parents were Republican office holders, for whom I campaigned.

The modern Republican Party has morphed into some kind of Fascist nightmare, that my late parents would never recognize. How any gay man could endorse them defies all logic.

But saying I want to shoot Republicans in the face is an RJ TOU violation. And rather sick, actually. So yeah, you have been reported.
