Savannah is indeed a charming city. Another is Charleston, SC. They're not that far from each other.

I like Savannah very much, been a few times. Great city to walk through. Lots of detail to catch the eye. Also Charleston as mentioned, very nice, but I've only been to once. There's another town around there that I hear is a real nice visit but haven't been yet, Beaufort, where parts of Forrest Gump was filmed.

Check out the book (not the movie) Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. You'll enjoy a whole look more of this breathtakingly beautiful city. Just avoid June through September.

And what about Charleston, North Carolina?

Savannah is a very beautiful, historic port city that is well worth a visit especially if you are into history and architecture. The same for Charleston, South Carolina. If you want beautiful, sandy beaches than between Savannah and Charleston is Hilton Head Island just off US Route 17(avoid I-95 at all times).

River street in Savannah is fun and there are a couple of gay bars in Savannah (Club One is my favorite) plus Hilton Head Island is pretty close by with it's beautiful beaches ! Click on "Gay Hilton Head" if you are a top (I did and it was a VERY good time ! )Gay Hilton Head

Charlotte is more metropolitan because it has the 2nd largest financial district in the country so its southern charm is sparse. Good place to visit and lots to do but I don't recommend people to go to Charlotte if they're wanting to experience Southern culture.
