Having posted to many forum threads, I noticed something. Often, after I post my ideas, opinions, comments or observations to a thread, it will stop dead, or die quickly with few posts following. (This doesn't include the endless political party or the religion threads.)
Are my posts so thorough as to have fully answered the OP's question?
Are my posts so dull that no one wants to even address the topic and thread anymore?
Are my posts so futile that they just kill the conversation entirely?
Did I add my two cents to a dead horse (mixed metaphors notwithstanding)?
Am I paranoid?
Is it coincidence?

Oh, the irony, if no one responds to this!

I don't know how some threads linger on while others fall short. I think many of the threads that linger on and on are not very intelligent conversations, like Britney's new video or some B.S. like that.

Sorry, bgcat57 but I know how you feel.

Can't it die already, I mean seriously, wasn't enough said 4 posts prior to this one?

Likely you gave the best and final answer. At least that is what I tell myself when I have the last post!

I have some theories:

1) It's a matter of frequency. You're creeping up on 1,000 posts. The more topics you comment in, the more chances you have to be the end (or close to the end) of the thread.

2) Everyone hates you. (Impossible!!!)

3) Caslon (AKA The Don) has forbidden the rest of RJ to address you. If we want to live, we must cooperate.

4) Your responses are confounding, and they will pick up again in a few months once people have pondered your deep words. They only SEEM dead.

5) A glitch in the matrix.

Hmmm.

Aw, I've killed off plenty of threads. Don't feel bad. We're like William H. Macy in 'The Cooler'.

But threads are like doritos -- they'll make more.

bgcat,

I had been thinking that what you describe was happening to me.

Yes, my initial reactions were negative (a silence conspiracy, etc.), but I've ended up with just assuming (without knowing) that what I said didn't need anything added, whether because it summed up things nicely, or was so wishy-washy-this-way-that, that the bouncing ball had no alternative but to drop like a hot potato.

bg,

If you really do have the awesome power to kill, please snuff "insulted: hit on by an ugly guy," the latest dumbest thread. Dancerjack smote it with manamana, but it lives on.

Correction: the 666 thread is currently the dumbest thread (and it may be the dumbest I've seen since I started reading the boards here over a year ago).

It's happened to me a quite a few times. Usually after an abortive attempt at humor, or even worse, a serious response to the OP. Sometimes I like to think that I might have said something so horrible that nobody wants to be further associated with the thread. But sadly, it's usually because the thread naturally played itself out and I was the last one to know it.

I say nothing is more deadly to threads than lame attempt at humor by a faceless member. I will kill this thread, and you can't beat me to it.

Any thread started or contributed to by anyone I find mildly annoying up to, but not limited to, those that make me want to slam Elizabeth Hasselbeck's face in a George Foreman Grill while alternately setting fire to and urinating upon a life size paper mache effigy of Ronald Reagan.

Ah, it's so good to read how many people share this feeling ...

I'm new here, but on another forum I finally came to the opinion that all threads I started died fast. I stopped wondering why, but I do know that certain buzzwords draw lots of readers - so it's likely other words repel them.

Naturally, we hate to think that after writing the definitive post, no one will ever read it! But it often feels that half or more posters haven't read anything but the OP anyway.

It happens to me too. I used to think every time that it happened, it was because I shot my mouth off inappropriately or didn't know what I was talking about. Now I realize that looking at it that way is pretty narcissistic of me... I've just decided to not take it personally anymore when it does happen.
