Hey fellas, my boyfriend and I are moving to Oklahoma City soon and I am very interested in learning about the gay community there. We are from Southern California and it will be a big change for the both of us. Anyone from OKC that could tell us more about it?

    DON'T DO IT!!!!

Okay all sarcasm aside OKC is not as terrible as everyone makes it out to be, but if you want gay culture you are moving to the wrong town as there is hardly any there. Downtown OKC is beautiful and there are tons to do: Bricktown, The Riverwalk, array of restaurants that line the streets and you have your fill of sports, art and some museums.

Outside of OKC the rest of the state does suck. There is a reason our government forced the Indians to move there, because nobody else wanted to live there.

Just give it a chance, the town is cool, the gay scene is not.

Yikes. Thanks for the advise msuNtx. I've researched some of downtown and it seemed nice. They even had a gay country bar which I love country dancing. I just hope it doesn't turn into the Chainsaw Massacre on the way over there.

I have a number of friends and guys I know from Wichita that have gone to the Habana (I've never been there). There are some good things about OKC, I have friends in the city. If you would like a tour, I can arrange it and they can give you more of a background on whats, where.

    ugh.

My parents fled southeast Oklahoma in 1956, only to return for very brief visits.

I was born in Kansas and raised in Oklahoma ( Tulsa and Miami) but I've also visited OKC a few times. Let's just say that I left when I was 17 and never looked back. It is not a gay-friendly area at all. Coming from California, a blue, liberal state, to OKC, an extremely religious, red state, is going to be a shock and a half.

Are you moving there due to work or family reasons? If not, then you should really consider moving somewhere else. The people are genuinely friendly but only to people just like them. If you're a white, Christian family man, then you'll fit in nicely and will be adored by the community. If you're anything but, then you'll have a hard time fitting in.

Oh, say hello to Sally Kern for me!

Dude, Oklahoma City isn't bad at all. downtown is pretty nice (bricktown, etc...) the Oklahoma City Thunder! is there.

gay culture? there's about 5-7 bars off of 39th st & penn area that basically have just about anything for just about everyone. there's the habana that (while sometimes shady) is cheap and allows you to go out and have a good time and walk home safely to a bed for the night.

finish line has pool tables, country music. that was our favorite there. very chilled, no drama -- just folks going there to have fun.

gay pride has thousands of people come out from all over the place. it's in late May this year (www.okcpride.org). Last year they honroed military service members and their partners to be the grand marshalls. it was pretty cool for me.

I was thoroughly surprised with OKC....I thought it was going to suck, and be anti-gay everywhere....but it's really not a bad place at all.

the summers do get stupid hot (100+ for days on end). not sure where you're moving from. and get used to hearing a tornado siren from march - june. and the winters can blow pretty bad. oh, and there's wildfires and earthquakes in oklahoma too.

aside from the weather being an extreme (which i found awesome as a meteorologist), I enjoyed my time there. and i didn't even live in OKC (i lived in Enid, about 90 minutes north).

do you like drag shows? if so, the Boom! has one of the funniest shows every sunday (Gospel brunch). and it's the only non-smoking bar in the area.

I'm in Oklahoma several times each month for business. I myself don't really like it. Plus their Mexican food in Oklahoma City sucks!
