What do you prefer, the big chain gyms or the smaller hardcore no BS type of gym?

Chains have the benefit and get my vote because if you travel, you usually get access to the gym as a guest at no cost and because it's the same equipment for the most part, you don't feel "lost".

Oh, Planet Fitness for sure! I love being kicked out whenever I moan or clank my weights. God knows that you have to moan and groan whenever you lift those massive dumbbells that they offer. I mean the heaviest dumbbell goes up to 70lbs. Can you believe that? That's hardcore! Plus, where else can you go and get doughnuts and pizza while you workout? icon_rolleyes.gif

Seriously, tho, I love the small, hardcore, meathead, testosterone-dripping, sweaty, manly-man's gym, where there's blood, puke and sweat all over the equipment. I mean so much man sweat that if you touched it, you would instantly get a testosterone high from it!

Love my Y in downtown Orlando

Lots of machines for cardio and muscles, lots of free weights.
Several varied areas with a mix of weights and weight machines
    Lots of different classes
    Indoor and outdoor pool
Space for stretching and body weight excercises
Balls, Bosus, medicine balls, kettle bells, foam rollers, jump-boxes, yoga mats etc
Great mix of people ( though no hardcore body builders icon_sad.gif
Great locker room, showers (and sauna and steam room )

Like my Planet Fitness here in Southern NJ..Just the gym I need and when I need it.. I have 2 jobs and have a crazy schedule so cannot always lift the same time or day so even being a compettitve runner makes it even harder to fit in but I love it still the same.. Will never have the body to be a Bodybuilder but happy with what I got though.

Ditto - I go to the Y but only because my work subsidizes the cost. I much preferred the 24 Hour Fitness.

Not crazy about the so called "meathead gyms". I think they follow an old school of thought on how to weightlift. I need room to do dynamic and body weight exercises and my "meathead gym" doesn't have a workout room nor really a stretching area. But I also don't like someplace like New York sports club where there are a million and one classes and I can't get into the cardio room ever because some fat chicks are trying to belly dance. Heavy bag is also required to be considered a great gym.
