Experiences with soy milk

I was just wondering about any experiences with soy milk any one else has had. It used to be touted as a miracle bean that we could use for all kinds of things such as for people who are lactose intolerant. I used it for years for that myself. How ever a few years ago I developed thyroid nodules for which soy milk has been linked to. Even SILK soy milk company backed that up. My most recent lab tests showed dangerously low testosterone levels. I did some more research and again chronic use of soy came up in several studies. All showed that after just a few weeks of stopping soy intake levels returned to normal. I .did that and sure enough not only did I feel different, but my levels shot up to a more normal range.

men have to be careful using soy products: soy gets metabolized into estrogen in the male body, if i remember what i read properly. for this reason it not only works against you when you're trying to masculanize your body through exercise, it can also cause some men to develop breasts. some people experience decreased testosterone. it goes on an on. eating some soy and tofu is a good way to get some protein variety in your diet as well as nutrients and fiber that meat doesn't have, but men have to use soy in moderation.

Yeah I know. icon_razz.gif A lot of the info regarding soy out there was more for women during menopause. Of course we no longer recommend that to them either. Most of the studies I noted were rather recent that actually had some validation behind them. I wonder why it keeps getting recommended for body builders.

I didn"t see that forum last week. A big thanks for the link muchmorethanmuscle. One of the other reasons I brought this up is because companies that market soy only talk about it's benefits. Also food companies are putting more of it into our food supply as additves. Since the majority of people only hear good things, it doesn't alert them as it should.

Soy products give me the nastiest gas. I inflate like a baloon and then the methane could peel paint off the walls. Some people can digest them well, I can't. I miss oriental food but it's worth it not to use it.

OK then question for you. If soy is out, what's the best protein for vegetarians? And just for the sake of argument lets leave out whey.

Mycoproteins (ex. Quorn) seem to have less associated adverse affects than soy -- in terms of fake meat products.

Humans need B-12.... We evolved eating and needing meat. Even monkeys eat insects (they are animals), lizards and will even kill birds to get added protein. Vegans go ape shit over the argument and I agree with them that factory farming is bad and many people eat too much meat, but every vegan I have ever known has ended up eating at least small portions of meats (that includes fish!) and given up soy - as a main protein source anyway. A little here and there is fine, but these vegans who have it breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year are destroying themselves. Meat, nuts, fruit, greens are food we need. Ground wheat flour and soy isolate shaped "chikyn" nuggets with hydrolyzed soy and corn protein and wheat gluten syrup = breast tissue and the fat roll that forms behind the pant zipper.

I laugh hearing that one. Everlasting gas that makes me need to clear the room too!! Also, I had terrible headaches from soy.

What happened to good ole peanut butter??? Hello!!!

Also...legumes, beans, rice, pinto beans,NUTS, OATMEAL........these are rich in proteins!!
    NO ANIMAL PRODUCT HERE!!!

Oh yeah...I eat fish and SALMON and good whole foods. I am not 100% Vegan...I do like cheese and when I do eat it I like goat cheese...that's not been SOY fed!!

    Off topic...but good ideas!!

As a vegetarian who tries to keep his soy to a healthy limit-- grains are also where it's at. Quinoa, barley, oats, groats, millet, all that stuff. Quinoa has complete protein, too, which is mighty hard to come by outside meat.

I talked to an Indian doc I work with and he is completely vegetarian. He eats beans, rice and all manner of vegetables. No meat products. I have tried the almond milk. Didn't care for it. The rice milk gave me the runs. icon_redface.gif
So now it's time for me to continue what I have been doing which is having a little protein for breakfast and even more fruits.

    COOL....

I like food and I like to cook. Today, I had just a Greek salad. I made it with a combination of fresh romaine and spinach greens. I added grape vine red Cherie tomatoes, marinated olives, bell pepper, onion, black beans, with goat cheese. Then I topped it off with soy free Greek Salad dressing and pow.....I also had that awesome Greek bread with Boursin garlic cheese spread. I toasted it in the oven and it was goood!!

Now, I know I am not all vegetarian...not sure I can ...but I will be SOY FREE!!

P.S. I don't drink cows milk either. To many hormones and antibiotics for me. I do like the sweetened almonds milk on my oatmeal. I will eat organic goats milk...in cheese format only!

wow quite an enlightening thread..i have been using soy milk daily for almost a year now..i stopped taking cow milk coz i heard there's a whole bunch of hormones in it and also i found it to aggravate my acne condition..i've not experienced any negative effects since i started using soy milk..HOWEVER having read this thread now it makes me wonder if that's the reason why i've plateud in my workout progress this entire year..despite having taken more than enough protein daily...i've remained relatively muscular and lean this whole year but i haven't got the gains that i wanted..it could be due to other factors too...AND i've remained fairly celibate this whole year too juz coz i don't feel like doing it..dunno if it's related but i might stop soy milk for a while to see if there r any changes..thanks for the info guys

Get off soy and take ZMA by twin labs to rebuild your testosterone levels to normal. I bet it's low...all the protein in the world will do nothing for you unLESS...you have adequate testosterone levels and even above normal for muscle gain. No body builder should ever take SOY. They should destroy the plant. It's a curse for humans!!
