My friend and I are heading down to the Charleston SC area for a relaxing weekend. We are staying at the Inn at Middleton Place, which is hit or miss from what I hear. I was wondering if anyone could give me some good ideas of places to eat, looking for places that are unique to Charleston and really capture the flavor of the area. Any ideas?

The reason why I asked is because next month, the Spoleto festival will be going on and there will be plenty of food variations throughout the event.

But here's a listing of restaurants I'd recommend:

    1. Charleston Grill
    2. Grill 225
    3. SNOB (Slightly North of Broad)
    4. Hominy Grill
    5. 82 Queen
    6. Kaminsky's - awesome dessert restaurant

    The restaurants I'd avoid:

    1. Hymans - Yes, that's the name of the restaurant and no, it's not owned by a bunch of lesbians. It's a popular restaurant and always full. The food sucks and it's a tourist trap.
    2. Wild Wings Cafe
    3. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co

I don't get out much here. Been to Bushido, and had the hottest sauces from their 10 roll challenge. Made me cry the first time, but I'm used to the heat now. Good stuff!
Aside from doing the usual tourist thing downtown in Chas, I don't know what all is really down there. Pantheon and Chuck's Tavern are nice gay bars. Hit those up, maybe? Don't wander anywhere with someone you know!
    Good luck! Have fun!
